JOB DESCRIPTION WEST HOLT MEDICAL SERVICES POSITION: MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST (ASCP) DEPARTMENT: LABORATORY REPORTS TO: LABORATORY TEAM LEADER FTE’s: 0.9 NON-EXEMPT POSITION SUMMARY: The Medical Technologist will be responsible for performing clinical laboratory testing in all areas of the department. This employee will have considerable independence in performing testing and will be expected to use self-discipline and judgment accordingly. This employee will follow all established standards of practice. This individual may assume some of the decision-making responsibilities generally assigned to the department supervisor and may be responsible for giving direction to the laboratory staff. The employee will work with self discipline, good judgment, and considerable independence while following established standards of practice. Overall will demonstrate technical competency and will consult with the supervisor. This position may involve working with patients of the following age groups: pediatrics, adolescent, adult and geriatric. The Medical Technologist must understand the use and limitations of the laboratory instrumentation and equipment. Must demonstrate proficiency in all areas of the clinical laboratory. Must be able to learn and utilize new technology as laboratory medicine changes. Must utilize appropriate protocol relating to the physical and psychological needs of patients. REQUIRED EDUCATION AND CREDENTIALS: Bachelors Degree in Medical Technology and accreditation with ASCP or equivalent. EMPLOYMENT VARIABLES: Scheduled work hours will vary based on the needs of the department or at the discretion of the supervisor. Work hours may include day, weekends and holidays. Position also requires taking call hours. When collecting patient specimens, follows the laboratory policy for patient identification and specimen labeling. Demonstrates clinical and technical competency in collection of specimens. Handles specimens properly regarding collection, processing, and storage. Prepares and process specimens for transport if necessary. Demonstrates knowledge of specimen requirements and understands the necessity of specimen integrity. Processes specimens for testing performed in the lab and reference lab following protocol to ensure appropriate tests are ordered and specimen handling is performed correctly. Follows proper procedure for storage of daily specimens tested and is able to locate and retrieve specimens so add-on testing can be accommodated. Adheres to the laboratory’s quality control policies by performing and documenting all instrument and procedural calibrations as required. Demonstrates technical competency in laboratory testing including the performance of quality control. Performs & documents routine quality control on all procedures and instruments. Follows the laboratory’s established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory’s established acceptable levels of performance. Is capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance and assures remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications. Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications. Ensure patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is properly functioning Performs testing of all complexity in the laboratory. Monitors test analyses and specimen examination to ensure acceptable levels of analytic performance is maintained. Recognizes and troubleshoots pre-analytical, analytical, and postanalytical causes of discrepant results. Follows the laboratory’s procedures for test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results. Calls critical values to the nurses’ station and/or physician, as needed. Sends daily work to the floor to be charted on the patient’s chart as quickly as possible. Sends a copy of reports to physicians and rest home as required. Completes all paperwork involved in the testing of patient samples. This includes examining the requisition/provider’s order to make sure that it is complete and that there is an appropriate diagnosis for each test, entering the patient and tests into the LIS, entering the patient on the appropriate worksheets, comparing the results from the interfaced instruments with values in the LIS or entering results into the LIS, and sending the results to the appropriate places. It also includes processing the requisition by making sure the appropriate charges are circled, making copies for the lab and HIM, making sure that there is a provider’s signature, and placing all the copies in the appropriate places. Print off reports from our reference lab and pathology group, check with our worksheets to make sure all information is correct and document that we have received the results. Then make copies for doctors, medical records and nursing homes. Check for culture charges. Put our copy of the results with the requisition. File in the appropriate place. Performs the preventative maintenance of laboratory equipment as outlined in the manuals. Ensures that equipment is assessed and documented as required. Recognizes equipment malfunction and takes corrective action. Participates in and maintains records that demonstrate the proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens Must have complete knowledge of the procedure for ordering, transporting, and record keeping from the American Red Cross as outlined in the Blood Bank Procedure Manual. Checks blood and releases crossmatched blood to RN. Reviews daily worksheets and quality control as assigned by the supervisor Provides orientation to all testing personnel. Also provides competency testing for nursing personnel involving the waivered testing that they perform. Must read and know the location of all of the procedure manuals. Demonstrates teamwork by willingly participating in the ordering, stocking, and organization of the department. Consistently ensures cleanliness and tidiness of entire site. Demonstrates accountability to ensure coverage of laboratory. Uses time well during slow periods to accomplish departmental goals. Adapts to changes in workload assignments as required or needed. Provides bacteriological testing of hospital areas and equipment for infection control when needed Attends all departmental, all staff, and other required inservice meetings.
