Summary:
To provide excellent patient care to collect process high quality specimens and perform pre-analytical
specimen processing and evaluation in a clinical lab setting, meeting all specifications to insure accurate
testing results in the Southlake Clinic main laboratory.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
1. Perform phlebotomy in a skillful manner, while making the patient feel comfortable, to obtain the
specimens needed to fulfill the doctor’s orders.
2. Instruct patients on proper collection procedures for other types of specimens (random urine collection,
24 hour urine specimen, sputum, and stool specimens).
3. Perform chemical dipstick and urine chemical dip confirmation testing, serology testing finger stick
glucose checks.
4. Perform and document daily or “as needed” quality control for waived testing.
5. Process laboratory specimens, which include evaluating correct specimen collection, centrifugation,
distribution, specimen separation, handling, identification and documenting rejected specimens.
6. Performs Medical Assistant responsibilities to include: preparing patient injections and/or give patient
injections, EKG’s, Blood pressure checks, and document information in the patient chart as necessary if
certified to perform these responsibilities.
7. Electronically order send out testing, prepare send-out testing specimens for transport to the reference
laboratory, and follow reference laboratory specimen handling requirements.
8. Utilizes basic computer skills for the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and Electronic Health Record
(EHR) programs. Such basic skills will include LIS test ordering, review of previously ordered LIS records,
manually entering waived testing results into the LIS, final test report distribution as needed, and tracking
that report printing and distribution for that location.
9. Unpacking and distribution of laboratory supplies and inventory control of the laboratory site.
10. Ability to work independently in the role of satellite laboratory staff and support satellite
clinic staffing needs.
11. Make patients feel at ease and educate them in the purpose of each procedure and how they can
participate to achieve high quality testing results.
12. Know and follow all OSHA and HIPAA requirements to safely perform duties and to protect patient
information.
13. Maintains the cleanliness and organization of the laboratory environment.
14. Performs data processing and clerical tasks as required.
15. Keeps manager informed of problematic situations or concerns.
16. Communicates clearly with main laboratory staff and their satellite location.
17. Performs related duties as required.




Certified Medical Assistant or Certified Laboratory Assistant
Minimum of 1 year phlebotomy and/or laboratory experience or no experience with 3 months training
in the Southlake Clinic main laboratory.
Minimum of a high school diploma

Language Skills
Read, analyze and interpret professional journals, technical procedures or government regulations. Write
clearly and legibly. Effectively present information and respond to questions from physicians, patients,
subordinates, co-workers, vendors, and the general public. Ability to explain in a calm and clear manner.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to calculate formulas involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, ratios; using
the metric system.
Reasoning Ability
Solve problems that involve taking into consideration a wide range of variables. Interpret a variety of
information sources and come to logical and accurate conclusions. Flexibility, adaptability and the balance to
keep organized and positive in a climate of constant change.
Physical Demands
To perform the essential functions of the job the employee is required to talk, hear, stand, walk, sit, use hand
to finger, fine hand/eye coordination, handle objects or controls, reach, lift, push/pull up to 40 pounds, have
close vision and ability to adjust focus.
Exposure to virus, disease and infection from patients and specimens in the work environment.
