2013 - Ontario Draft Horse Futurity Promotion Winner Trippcrest Fury’s Ajak, owned and exhibited by Gord Ruzicka Bred by Trippcrest Farms – Jane Gray. On October 26th, 2013, 16 out of 30 eligible horses returned to Carson’s Fall Colors Draft Sale to compete for the pot of $38,786.86. To be eligible, the horse had to be purchased in the Futurity Foal section of the 2011 sale. This futurity program was started to promote the draft horse industry by encouraging all draft horse breeders to participate in a futurity program that will demonstrate the breed characteristics and versatility of the draft breed as a halter horse and as a hitch horse. The intent is that the horse will appeal to one or all aspects of today’s market and produce a very saleable animal for its owner by participating in this program. The competition is decided by total points awarded by 3 judges, in three classes. The competition started with the halter class and it was obvious with the well turned out horses this was going to be a good day. Next up was the Pattern Class and it was here that you could really see the results of the training (both for the horse and the driver as knowing the prepublished course was critical in keeping those points). The weather once again didn’t co-operate, so the pattern class was moved to the side of the sales arena as the show must go on. Finally completing the days events was the cart class which was split into two sections. All competitors eagerly awaited the results the next morning, which were announced just before the horse sale and congratulations went to Gord Ruzicka with his overall win on Trippcrest Fury’s Ajak. So the long trip from Alberta was worth while with Gord winning $10,236.56. An awesome Prize Pot for any 2 Year Old horse to win. The rest of the results were as follows: 1st - $10,236.56 Gord Ruzicka on Trippcrest Fury’s Ajak 2nd - $ 6,824.36 Eric Chretien on Ogdenburg AX’s Whitaker 3rd - $ 5,118.28 Dan Barron on Cal-Scott Gordy’s Champ 4th - $ 3,412.19 Kyle Forsyth on Walkerbrae Drew 5th - $ 2,559.14 Kent Bruce on Stoney Lake Laura 6th - $ 1,706.09 Jeremy Tingey on Jardine Black Velvet 7th - $ 1,706.09 Leah Everson on Carson’s Dynamo 8th - $ 853.05 Mike Stockes on Stocrest Cam th 9 - $ 853.05 Roy Beuerman on LeaBra Fascinator 10th - $ 853.05 Malcom Yeadon on Ryanday Flash’s Flora 10th to 16th All received $200.00 for competing in all 3 classes. Open Futurity Promotion Meeting Minutes February 16th, 2013 The committee opened this meeting up to anyone interested in having some in-put into this event and getting feed-back. The meeting was held at Carson’s Sales Arena in the boardroom. Memebers Present: Pat Stokes, David Carson, Don Walker, Bob Black, Cal Lipsett Jr., Margo Carson, Eli Ebersol, Nate Fenech, Roy Beuerman, John Northcote, Leah Everson, Brad Carson, Dan Barron, Jim Dale, Malcolm & Kathy Yeadon, Heather Frank, David Zister. Absent: John McWilliams The following points were discussed and will be implemented this year. The income that the judges will be given was reviewed and will be increased to $300.00 for each judge. The committee will discuss who the judges will be at the meeting held at the CNE. All 3 events for the futurity will be held on one day, the Friday of the Fall Draft Horse Sale – Halter, Pattern Class & Cart Class -in this order. With the results being announced on the Saturday Morning. The order for the pattern class will be decided as each competitor leaves the halter class and they will select a number out of the hat to decide the order. If the cart class needs to be split, due to the numbers, It will be the first 8 horses. No more than 8 horses will go in the ring at once. The same driver, cart and harness is to be used in both the pattern and cart class. If the cart has brakes, they are not allowed to be used. I different individual may show the horse in the halter class. The Breeders Award payout was discussed and reviewed with the final breakdown being as follows: 1st - $500.00 2nd - $300.00 3rd - $200.00 It was discussed if the number of entries into the Futurity should be restricted. The members decided that we will leave it as it is, and will review this in a few years if we find out we are unable to handle the amount of returning futurity competitors. To help make it easier for the judges, the pattern class will be divided into 1/3 sections with each judge being allocated 100 points for their different section. Then all 3 judges scores will be added together to find the winner. In the line class the judges will judge each horse from the same point so that they are seeing the animal move all at the same time. The option of a Junior Award was discussed but it was decided that this was not necessary within this competition. We are looking for a logo that we could use to distinguish this individual event, The Draft Horse Futurity Promotion Program, and use with any future printed material. All suggestions are welcome and have to be submitted before the CNE. Please get your thinking caps on. The prize money breakdown was discussed and reviewed but this will NOT be implemented until the 2015 weanlings compete. The breakdown is as follows: 1st 24.50% 2nd 20.00% rd 3 16.00% 4th 11.00% th 5 8.00% 6th 5.50% th 7 5.00% 8th 3.50% th 9 3.00% 10th 2.50% All remaining competitors that complete in all 3 events received $200.00 each. The course for the 2015 competition will be reviewed and may be altered with additional elements added, but this will be decided by the committee members only. The new course will be printed and posted before the event.
