Transportation and Communications: Search for information and pictures on the main types of transportation for Canadians and Americans in the 1920s and 1930s. Particular topics that should be covered include, but are not limited to: cars and trucks trains types and uses of aeroplanes ocean transportation local and long distance communications 2. Prohibition: Find out all about prohibition in Canada. Where did it take place (Make a map!)? How was it smuggled? Who were the main Canadian smugglers? How did Canadian police try to stop smuggling? Were there any famous incidents? Also cover any related crimes. 3. Economic Boom and Problems: start with Text pages 145-147. Find pictures and descriptions of what work was like in the 1920s. Find pictures of factories and factory workers, people working in stores and businesses, and farm families. How much did people get paid? Did anyone ever go on strike? How hard was the work? You may want to check out a book on the history of Ottawa to learn about local businesses. 4. Sports, Entertainment, and the Arts: start with Text 140-141, 150-151172-175. Find out about Canadian and American entertainment, and Canadian sports (not American!!). Look for information and pictures on: movies and movie stars (Some big ones were Canadian) home entertainment (magazines, radios, records) music (jazz) Group of Seven professional and Olympic sports (particularly the 1928 Olympics) other ways to entertain oneself (local sports and games, etc.) 5. Political Parties and Politics: start with Text pages 136-39,168-171. Sounds boring but this challenging topic covers a very revolutionary period in Canadian politics. Lots of new parties are formed, join together, fail, or succeed throughout the boom and bust times of the 1920s. 6. Canada and the World: start with. How do Canada=s relations with Britain, the USA, and other countries change in the 1920s? Do we gain or lose international respect? Do we sign any major treaties or make any major agreements. This topic starts with Resolution IX and the Treaty of Versailles negotiations and ends with the Treaty of Westminster in 1930. 7. How average people lived: The 1920s were supposed to be a “good time” for most Canadians and Canadian families. What=s the evidence for this? In what ways was life getting better for average Canadians in the 1920s? What were typical jobs and wages like? Were living standards improving? What would typical homes be like?
