MCh Otorhinolaryngology*
The Masters in Otorhinolaryngology is a unique, ground breaking, innovative
programme developed in collaboration with leading, internationally renowned consultant
otorhinolaryngologists.
The programme is designed to lead to a Masters in Surgery (MCh), Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip) or
Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert) in Otorhinolaryngology.
The programme is aimed at qualified and registered medical practitioners with a minimum of two years postqualification clinical experience. It offers the opportunity to develop and enhance your career in the rapidly
changing field of otorhinolaryngology, enabled through a flexible full-time programme.
The programme offers the opportunity of obtaining a full MCh after completion of the six modules plus the
dissertation (one year full-time), a Postgraduate Diploma after the completion of six modules, or Postgraduate
Certificate after the completion of three modules.
The aims of this programme are to:




enable you to enhance a sound knowledge of, and increased autonomous mastery of specialised clinical
skills;
enable you to develop skills of systematic independent thinking and innovative clinical practice based
on a comprehensive understanding of the underpinning evidence base;
develop you, as an otorhinolarygologist within the health care sector to become an education leader,
collaborate with other healthcare professionals and promote team working;
enable you to critically analyse and evaluate the evidence base of otorhinolaryngology care and make
sound judgements on the application of the evidence in a clinical setting.
The experienced and renowned teaching team is led by Mr Rahul Kanegaonkar, Consultant
Otorhinolaryngology Surgeon.

The programme delivers up to date knowledge on Otorhinolaryngology topics and includes the following:

national and international guidelines and discuss their implementation
difficult/rare clinical case studies and provides structured protocols for patient management
opportunities for one-to-one discussions on matters related to the programme as well as career advice
an opportunity to complete a research project to gain experience in a topic of particular interest
an opportunity for you to observe various surgical investigations at leading centres of expertise
an opportunity for dedicated private study time
Clinical attachments
You will have the opportunity to be attached clinically within a local hospital or Trust. The length and types of
clinical attachments will depend on whether you are currently working in clinical practice in the UK, whether
you are an overseas student without GMC registration or whether you are an overseas student with GMC
registration. The clinical attachments will enable you to apply the theory you learn in each module to practice.
International Sponsorship Scheme for international medical graduates

Module information
The programme consists of the following modules:
Foundations of Clinical Practice (20 credits) – this module is compulsory for the Mch; PgDip and PgCert
Otology – Neuro Otology (20 credits)
Paediatric Otorhinolaryngology (20 credits)
Rhinology – Facial Plastics (20 credits)
Head and Neck (20 credits)
Research Approaches and Methods (20 credits)
Research Dissertation (60 credits)
To be awarded the Postgraduate Certificate you are required to study the Foundations of Clinical Practice
module (which is a compulsory module for all exit awards) and two further modules (choosing from Otology –
Neuro Otology, Paediatric Otorhinolaryngology, Rhinology – Facial Plastics and Head and Neck).
To be awarded the Postgraduate Diploma you are required to study all five surgical modules in addition to the
Research Approaches and Methods module.
To be awarded the MCh you must successfully complete all five surgical modules, the Research Approaches
and Methods Module and the Research Dissertation.
