An official statement should be issued within the first hour of sighting, with follow-up at a later time regarding progress into the investigation. It is proposed that a proforma statement be produced by the Directors and Dr. John Cann and made through Government Information Services. When a report of a fish kill is received, either the Fisheries Wardens (first choice) or marine police (marine based with fast boats) are to be the first to respond. They are to visit the site and determine the extent of the fish kill and report to the Director, DEP or DCS, who will order a further response from DCS and DEP staff if such is deemed necessary. If the report concerns stranded live marine mammals, birds, or turtles it is extremely important that a Curator at BAMZ or Head Aquarist be advised ASAP. If it concerns dangerous, live land animals or injured land animals, it is extremely important that a Curator at BAMZ or Head Zookeeper be advised ASAP. All Bird Kills should be reported to the Government Vet ASAP. It is critical that the appropriate agency be advised immediately so that a timely response can be assured.
