FISH KILL
The following are in charge of the overall operations with regard to fish kills:
 Fishery-related problems – Dr. Fred Ming, Director, Dept. of Environmental Protection
 Health-related problems – Dr. John Cann, Chief Medical Officer, Dept. of Health
The Director of DEP or DCS and the Chief Medical Officer, Dept. of Health are the authorities on issuing
statements to the press and general public with regard to any problems which may affect the Island.
An official statement should be issued within the first hour of sighting, with follow-up at a later time regarding
progress into the investigation. It is proposed that a proforma statement be produced by the Directors and Dr.
John Cann and made through Government Information Services.
When a report of a fish kill is received, either the Fisheries Wardens (first choice) or marine police (marine
based with fast boats) are to be the first to respond. They are to visit the site and determine the extent of the fish
kill and report to the Director, DEP or DCS, who will order a further response from DCS and DEP staff if such
is deemed necessary.
