North Central Thames Foundation School (NCTFS) Individual Placement Description - Luton and Dunstable Hospital NHS Foundation Trust Placement The department The type of work to expect and learning opportunities Location Supervisor(s) Main duties of the placement Typical working pattern in this placement Employer information F1 Gastroenterology Gastroenterology Trainees will get exposure to the management of a range of acute medical and gastrointestinal emergency admissions, including patients with GI Bleeds, Liver Disease and Acute Severe Colitis. They will also gain some experience of caring for patients with conditions such as Crohn’s disease, Irritable Bowel Syndrome and patients with Nutritional problems. The ward also takes patients with other general medical problems. The F1 trainee will be responsible for the ward care of patients, shared with other members of staff. They will have the opportunity to develop their team working and organisational skills, as well as other general medicine based skills such as; safe prescribing, updating and maintaining accurate patient records and communicating with patients and their families. The Gastro Team at any one time comprises of one of the Consultants, who are on the ward each day, two Specialist Registrars, two Core Medical Trainees and two F1 doctors. Senior support is therefore always available but there is also the opportunity to review patients independently within certain parameters. Luton and Dunstable Hospital- Ward 11 Dr Anthony Griffiths Attending Morning Handover, Post-Take and Consultant led ward rounds Undertake routine jobs such as bloods/ cannulae, liase with other specialties and attend to any jobs identified during ward round Undertaking procedures such as ascetic taps and drains Book & review investigations Review patients and write up electronic discharge letters Updating drug charts, prescribing overnight fluids, warfarin and insulin Engaging in discussions with patients and their families Gastroenterology Ward Mon: Consultant WR am Medical Meeting 1400 – 1500, Ward work Tues: Consultant Board Round and New patient review am, Grand Round 1400 – 1500, Ward work pm Wed: Consultant Board Round and New patient review am, Ward work pm Thurs: Consultant WR am Gastro MDT lunchtime Ward work pm Fri Consultant Board Round and New patient review am, Ward work pm Across all rotations – there are on-calls as per rota Mon-Fri: 0900 – 2200 – 0900-1600 base wards – 1600 – 2200 EAU clerking 0900 – 2200 EAU clerking (to be confirmed) Sat/Sun: 0900 – 2200 – Ward cover weekends (Jobs, review of sick patients) Sat/Sun: 0830 – 1600 – Weekend ward cover (EAU post take ward round, jobs, clerking) Nights: 2030 – 0900 – Fri-Sun or Mon-Thurs (covering 12 medical wards, ward jobs, unwell patients etc.) Rotas: F1 ward based rota is a 1:20 full-shift rota.
