Press Release - For immediate use THE HOUSE OF FAIRY TALES Exquisite Trove Newlyn Art Gallery, 23 July – 2 October 2010 A travelling collection of mysterious objects from more than 100 artists, merged with extraordinary artefacts on loan from West Cornwall museums Inspired by cabinets of curiosities or Wunderkammer, Exquisite Trove is an exploration of the human desire to collect, display and tell tales with objects and images that reflect our personal histories and a fascination with the imagined lives of others. The exhibition is an amalgamation of The House of Fairy Tales’ travelling collection of significant and treasured items from artists as diverse as Ged Quinn, Rachel Whiteread and Cornelia Parker, and an eclectic selection of strange and wonderful objects loaned from ten local museums. The combination of artwork, possessions and museum artefacts provokes fascinating and intriguing interpretations. [See below for lists of participating artists and museums.] As well as the exhibition being a beautiful and complex one, it is hoped that it will create cross traffic between the gallery and the museums with new audiences drawn to both. Throughout the exhibition there will be storytelling areas, books and activities for children of all ages that will inspire new narratives about the objects on display. There will be a weekly programme of storytelling sessions and workshops throughout the exhibition. Exquisite Trove is a collaboration between The House of Fairy Tales and Newlyn Art Gallery. - ends -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Editor’s Notes: (1) CONTRIBUTING ARTISTS Frida Alvinzi, Richard Ballinger, Fiona Banner, Lydia Barnes, Peter Bond, Virginia Bounds, Florence Boyd, Tony Brennan, Clare Burgess, Rachel Cattle, Natasha Chambers, Paul Chaney, Toby Christian, Cedric Christie, Oliver Clegg, Angela Cockayne, ContainerPLUS, Tom Crawford, Adam Dant, Ian Dawson, Jo Digger, Annabel Elgar, Gordon Faulds, FIELDCLUB, William Fontaine, Nancy Fouts, Jen Franklin, Naomi Frears, Dmitri Galitzine, Maria Teresa Gavazzi, Bert Gilbert, Rob Goodwin, Carolyn Gowdy, Marcelle Hanselaar, Melissa Hardie, Anne Hardy, Andy Harper, Mark Hammond, Stuart Haygarth, Alice Herrick, Kurt Jackson, Jimp, John Jones, John Keys, Josh Knowles, LEO , Dan Lobb, Amanda Lorens, Alastair Mackie, Otto Mama, Sam McEwen, Jeff McMillan, Damien Meade, Charlotte Mew, Angus Mill, B Minns, Cathy de Monchaux, Melanie Monchot, Amanda Moore, Anne Charlotte Morgenstein, Annie Morris, Richard Niman, Lois Olmstead, Orly Orbach, Cornelia Parker, Hadrian Pigott, Raul Pina, Ged Quinn, Marlowe ChanReeves, Max Reeves, Abigail Reynolds, Steve Richards, Barbara Rosenthal, Paul Sakoilsky, Lindsay Sekulowicz, Colin Self, Tim Shaw, Jane Simpson, Jesse Leroy Smith, Alex Smirnoff, Rodrigo Soloranzo, David Spero, Tatiana de Stempel, Brigitte Stepputtis, Samantha Sweeting, Francis Thorburn, Blair Todd, Katherine Tulloh, Caesar Turk, Gavin Turk, Francis Upritchard, Raisa Veikkola, Julie Vermeille, Jessica Voorsanger, Daryl Waller, Kate Walters, Vivienne Westwood, Rupert White, Rachel Whiteread, Simon Willems, Viktor Wynd, Billy Wynter, Elliott Young, Yoke & Zoom (2) CONTRIBUTING MUSEUMS Constantine Heritage Collection, Geevor Tin Mine, Helston Folk Museum, Marazion Museum, National Maritime Museum Cornwall, Penlee House Gallery and Museum, Penryn Museum, Porthcurno Telegraph Museum, Royal Cornwall Museum, and Wayside Museum.
