Editor’s Note: Recreation Reports are printed every other week.
September 16, 2011
September is a great month to visit the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. Hiking trails are
less crowded, nighttime temperatures are cooler, and huckleberry picking is still a favorite pastime. This
is also a month when changes start occurring in national forest campground operations and other forestrelated activities.
HUNTING: Many archery, muzzleloader and modern firearm users are visiting national forests
searching for their elusive prey. Forest visitors need to remember to make your presence known when
recreating in the woods during hunting seasons; wear brightly colored clothing and talk or sing so hunters
will know that you are in the area and not their prey. Please refer to the Washington State Big Game
Hunting Seasons and Rules pamphlet for hunting information, hunting season dates and complete
regulations.
WOODCUTTING: The Industrial Fire Precaution Level (IFPL) for Zones 675 and 680 (the Wenatchee
segment of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest) is at a level 3 which means that all firewood
cutting activity is prohibited. The IFPL in Zone 680 will lower to level 2 on Saturday, September 17.
Woodcutting is still allowed in the Okanogan National Forest until 1 p.m. (as the IFPL in zones 684 and
678W is now at a level 2). As temperatures continue to cool down and more precipitation occurs, the
IFPLs for these zones will drop to lower levels. Please contact the nearest ranger district office for
current woodcutting information.
CAMPFIRE RESTRICTIONS: On the Chelan, Entiat and Wenatchee River ranger districts campfires
are allowed only in metal fire rings in designated campgrounds, in the Mad Lakes and North Fork
roadless areas, and in Glacier Peak, Henry M. Jackson, Alpine Lakes, and Chelan-Sawtooth Wilderness
areas. Campfires are not allowed above 5,000 feet elevation in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness.
New campfire restrictions are in effect on the Cle Elum Ranger District. Campfires are allowed north
of I-90 in the Cle Elum Valley and west to Snoqualmie Pass. Campfires are banned west of I-90 and east
of the Cle Elum Valley except in approved metal fire rings in Beverly and DeRoux campgrounds and at
Ken Wilcox Horse Camp on Table Mountain.

No campfire restrictions are in effect on the Naches, Methow Valley and Tonasket Ranger Districts.
Please contact individual Ranger District offices for more information.
CAMPGROUND CLOSURES: This is the time of year when Forest Service employees start to
winterize campgrounds and get them ready for wintry weather. Along with the winterization process
come closures of a number of campgrounds. A tentative schedule for the closure of some campgrounds
on the Cle Elum Ranger District follows:
 Cle Elum River Camp, Cayuse Horse Camp, Mineral Springs, Swauk and Taneum Creek
campgrounds closed on September 12.
 Salmon la Sac, Wish Poosh and the Gale Creek Loop in Kachess Campground will close on
September 27.
Other campground closures will be occurring as the weather gets colder. Please contact any ranger
district office for current fall forest conditions.
WOODCUTTING &INDUSTRIAL PRECAUTION LEVELS CHANGE:



In response to increased fire danger in lower and mid-elevation areas of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National
Forest, Industrial Fire Precaution Level (IFPL) 3 is in effect in Zones 675 and 680. Under a Level 3 IFPL,
firewood cutting is prohibited. The IFPL for Zone 680 will lower to a level 2 on Saturday, September 17.
The IFPL for zones 684 and 678W is level 2, this requires chainsaws to be turned off at 1 p.m. and
woodcutters must remain in the woodcutting area for a one hour fire watch after saws are turned off.
For current IFPL information go to the Washington State Department of Natural Resources web page at
http://www.dnr.wa.gov/recreationeducation/topics/fireinformation/pages/rp_fire_ifpl.aspx .
SAFETY:
If heading to the woods, it’s a good idea to be sure to let someone know where you are going, when you plan to
return and what to do if you don’t return on time. Remember to let them know when you do return. Make sure your
vehicle is in good working order. Dress appropriately for all weather conditions. Avoid cotton clothing and dress in
layers. Stay dry, shed layers if you are sweating, add layers if you are cold. Wear sturdy waterproof boots. Stay
warm, stay dry, stay safe and have fun.

affected by the closures. For the most current Holden trail information please contact the Chelan Ranger
District office.
TRAILS: Maintained means that downed logs have been removed from the trail. The low and midelevation trails are snow free and many are maintained.
Most of the high country is melting out, but the passes (especially the shaded sides) are still snow
covered. However, due to late snow melt in the high country all major stream crossings without bridges
or footlogs are still hazardous due to unseasonably high stream flows. If you are going out for a day hike
beware that a stream crossing that is safe to cross in the morning may be too hazardous to cross on the
way back in the afternoon, because of increased snow melting in the afternoon heat. If you choose to
cross snow covered passes, ice axes (and knowing how to do self-arrest) is recommended. Even short
uncontrolled slides can result in crashing into rocks or trees.
Strong winds can occur at any time and more trees are likely to fall across the trails. In burned
areas, there can be quite a few newly fallen trees across the trails.
All Holden Village area non-wilderness trails have been maintained.

the charm of this rustic cabin.
2. Teanaway Guard Station is located along North Fork Teanaway Road No. 9737 north of Cle
Elum. This small cabin offers a cozy spot for two people to enjoy the Teanaway Valley. The
cabin has one bunk bed set that offers two twin beds.
Amenities and number of occupants vary. For more information or to make reservations for
these cabins, contact Reserve USA at 1-877-444-6777 on line at www.reserveusa.com .

and a local weather forecast is available at http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/otx/ .
SNOW: The Pacific Crest Trail from Hart’s Pass to Canada still has more snow than usual with some
isolated, large and deep snow patches that are somewhat challenging for hikers and blocking stock near Rock
Pass and Woody Pass.
CHELAN RIDGE HAWK MIGRATION FESTIVAL is on Saturday, September 17th at Memorial Park
in Pateros from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Shuttles to Chelan Ridge begin at 8 a.m. For more information and to
reserve a spot, go to www.ncwaudubon.org .
 This free festival provides activities for the whole family to enjoy.
 Environmental education and interpretation--learn all about migrating raptors and the ecosystems
on which they depend
 Catch shuttles for field trips to the spectacular Chelan Ridge raptor migration site. Chelan Ridge
sits at 5,675 feet above sea level along the flyway for migrating raptors like the Broad-winged
Hawk. Biologists, who live at the ridge during the migration season, offer insight on how the
birds are studied and tracked. See raptors like Sharp-shinned Hawks as they are banded and
released. This is an amazing experience with environmental education and interpretation
conducted by an on-site educator and Forest Service personnel.
CHELAN RIDGE RAPTOR MIGRATION PROJECT: This year’s raptor count has started, guests are
welcome to come up and join in the count.
 Directions from Winthrop--Go south on Highway 20, about 2 miles south of Twisp, the highway
along the Methow River turns into Highway 153. Travel south to Black Canyon Road, between
mileposts 6 and 7, south of Methow. Turn right on Black Canyon Road (#4010) and drive 9 miles to
junction with road No. 8020. Turn left and drive 3.5 miles to the parking area. Travel time: about 1.5
hours.
 Directions from Wenatchee: Go north on Highway 97 past the Chelan turn-off to milepost 224. Turn
left at the Antoine Creek Road sign and drive 1.5 miles. Turn right on Antoine Creek Road, which
turns into road No. 8140 On the ridge top, go right at the T intersection on Road No. 8020. Keep right
for another mile to the second parking area. Travel time: about 1.5 hours. There is no water or
developed camping at the site. Be prepared for harsh weather conditions. The three-quarter mile hike
to the observation site is moderate.
NORTH CASCADES HIGHWAY 20 is open. The Washington Pass parking area and overlook trail at
Washington Pass are closed weekdays due to paving operations. Crews will be paving the overlook trail,
located along Highway 20 west of Winthrop. The gate will be locked Monday through Friday evenings.
The gate will be open Friday evenings and through the weekends. Paving should be completed by
September 17.
WOODCUTTING: Fire Precaution Levels are currently at level 2 “Hoot-owl” in zones 684 and 678W
(change in precaution level requires chainsaws to be turned off at 1:00 and woodcutters must remain in
the woodcutting area for a one hour fire watch after saws are turned off).
Permits to cut firewood are on sale at the Methow Valley Ranger District office. They can also be
purchased locally at Hanks Harvest Foods in Twisp, the Chevron Station in Twisp and Pardners Mini
Market in Winthrop. These permits are valid only on the Methow Valley and Tonasket Ranger Districts.
ROADS: In the Twisp River area, a large debris flow came down an unnamed drainage near War Creek
destroying a portion of Forest Road No. 4430-100 leading to the War Creek Trailhead. The debris from
this flow was deposited near War Creek Bridge across the Twisp River, blocking Forest Roads 4430 and
4420. Debris has been cleared from both 4430 and 4420 roads and they are open to high clearance

vehicles. The road to the War Creek Trailhead will take a considerable amount of work to reconstruct and
will remain closed to vehicles for the rest of the year. A trail has been cut through the debris for hiker and
stock access to War Creek Trail, vehicles need to park on the side of the roads No. 4430 or No. 4420 (do
not block road).
Debris has been cleared from the roads in the Gold Creek area, and all are now open to high
clearance vehicles.
Libby Creek Road, south of Twisp, is still closed near the intersection with Forest Road No. 4300,
as is the Volstead Creek Road 4225-200.
Ramsey/Boulder Road No. 1631-5009-200 will remain closed this year to all motorized vehicles,
due to a washout in the middle of the road, making the road unsafe to drive on.
We will continue working on road repairs as funding becomes available. Check the Methow Valley
District website www.fs.usda.gov/goto/okawen/conditions or call the office at 509-996-4000 for up-todate information.

Very brushy, easy to lose the trail, especially near Three Fools Creek and on the
descent into and ascent out of Big Face Creek. Encountered over 500 blown-down
trees. Three separate areas the trail was obliterated by trees. There was some
snow, but it was not really an issue affecting travel. The trail has not been
maintained or cleared of down trees for over 6 years and is difficult to follow.

Trail closed to stock from Boulder Creek to Mill Creek. The trail is logged out to
Boulder Creek. There is no safe place for stock to turn around other than at
Boulder Creek. There are no plans to log out beyond Boulder Creek this year. The
new wash-outs were due to high water from the Boulder Creek Trail and were
caused by a slide at milepost 4.
The trail is closed to ALL travel between Mill Creek and Cedar Crossing. The
north approach, from Chancellor to Cedar Crossing has slid into the creek and is
very difficult and dangerous to negotiate. Impassable to stock and not
recommended for bikers or hikers. From Holman Pass on the Pacific Crest Trail to
junction with Devil’s Ridge Trail #752, near Sky Pilot Pass, trail is very muddy .

between Devil's Dome and Devil's Creek Camp area and Dry Creek stream from
snow fields. Lots of blow downs and heavy brush overgrowth between Devil's
Dome and Devil's Creek Camp. Blowdowns are mostly smaller dead trees making
a big tangle to negotiate.

ROAD CLOSURES: North Fork Tieton Road No. 1207 is open to non-motorized traffic (hikers,
mountain bikes and horses) from Road No. 1207-250. The Miriam Creek Bridge was stabilized enough
to warrant use by these users.
The following roads are closed to all motorized traffic due to extensive damage caused by spring
floods.






Little Rattlesnake Road No. 1501 is closed for 5.1 miles from the junction of forest road No. 1500/1501

WOODCUTTING: Woodcutting is temporarily suspended due to the Industrial Fire Precaution Level 3
that is currently in effect for zones 675 and 680. The IFPL in Zone 680 will lower to level 2 on
September 17.
DAY USE SITES ARE ALL OPEN: Boulder Cave and Clear Lake Day Use Sites, Clear Lake Boat
Launch and Day Use, Bumping Lake Boat Launch and Day Use, Horseshoe Cove Boat Launch and Day
Use, Dog Lake and Leech Lake (located on White Pass Lake) are all open.
All sites require a $5 per vehicle parking fee or the Golden Age/Access, Interagency Senior/Access,
Northwest Forest Pass, or Interagency Annual Pass.
BOULDER CAVE: The highly popular Boulder Cave area is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a
week during the summer.
When walking through the cave always use a flashlight and stay on the trail. Keep noise to a
whisper and watch your step. Remember, Boulder Cave is home to several species of bats that warrant
everyone’s respect and attention.
Currently, there is a nationwide move to protect bats from a highly deadly fungus, White Nose
Syndrome that is killing bats by the millions in the east and mid-east. Boulder Cave is one of several
caves in the northwest being monitored closely for the deadly fungus. Every effort is being made to
educate the public and keep them up-to-date on the movement of the fungus. In the event the disease
reaches the northwest, the cave may be closed. It is very important that everyone visiting Boulder Cave
adhere to cave rules by staying on the trail.
CAMPFIRES: Currently, there are no campfire restrictions in place on the Naches Ranger District. The
danger of a campfire escaping its ring or sparks flying into nearby dry forest duff, such as tree needles or
grass, and starting a fire is high. Don’t take the chance of starting a forest fire; make sure your campfire
is out before leaving your campsite. Drown your campfire, stir it, and drown it again until it is cool to the
touch. Remember, you could be held responsible for the suppression costs of a forest fire.
DEEP CREEK AND BUMPING ROAD CLOSURE: Deep Creek Road No. 1808 and Bumping Road
No. 1800 remain closed to ALL TRAFFIC due to construction of two new bridges.
If construction goes according to plan, the Bumping Road could be open by fall. Deep Creek Road
will remain closed until Forest Service crews can access the road beyond the new bridge to work on areas
damaged by flooding. Expectations are to have it open in the spring of 2012 if work goes well. The
completion is dependent on weather. All traffic is prohibited behind the closure signs/gates for public and
workers safety.
The closure area is within 300 feet of the road centerline for:
(a) Bumping Road No. 1800 beginning at its junction with Deep Creek Road No. 1808 (T16N
R12E NE ¼ Sec. 34) and ending ¼ mile West of Deep Creek (T16N, R12E, SW ¼ Sec. 34).
(b) Deep Creek Road No. 1808 beginning at the point of intersection with Copper Creek near
the Mount Aix Trailhead (T15N, R12E, SE ¼ Sec. 3) ending ¼ mile west of Deep Creek
(T15N, R12E, NE ¼ Sec. 16).
MOTORIZED TRAILS OPEN: All motorized use trails on the Naches Ranger District are open. This
doesn’t mean the trails are any less susceptible to damage as many are still wet and runoff continues its
downhill course. Users need to be conscious of where they ride and take steps to protect trails.
CAMPGROUNDS: All district campgrounds are open with the exception of Indian Creek Campground
which is now closed. For reservation campgrounds go online to www.recreation.gov or call 1-877-4446777.
GROUP RESERVATION SITES: All Group Reservation sites are managed by the Forest Service and
require a reservation through the www.recreation.gov website. There are NO discounts on group sites.

FOREST PASSES: No pass is required to drive on national forest lands other than a valid driver’s
license or Off Highway Vehicle tag if you are operating an off road/non-street legal vehicle. You do,
however, have the option to purchase a Northwest Forest Pass ($30 annual or $5 day) if you use
designated boat launches, day use sites or trailheads on National Forest Lands in Washington and Oregon.
You also have the option of paying a $5 day use fee at these sites.
If you are planning on using national park, national forest, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of
Reclamation, or United States Fish and Wildlife areas, you can purchase the Interagency Annual Pass for
$80. In Washington and Oregon the Annual Pass can be used in lieu of the Northwest Forest Pass.
If you are 62 years or older and a U.S. citizen or permanent resident with a green card you can
purchase an Interagency Senior card for $10. This is a lifetime pass.
DISCOVER PASS -- KNOWING WHERE YOU ARE: The big question for many Washingtonians is,
“Where do I need the Washington State Discover pass?” Many have asked if they need it to visit Mt.
Rainier or Chinook Pass and the answer is NO. What you do need to know is where you are and on which
state or federal agency land you are visiting.
You DO NOT need a Discover pass when visiting national parks or national forests. You DO need
a Discover pass if you are driving on Washington State Fish and Wildlife, Washington State Department
of Natural Resources or Washington State Parks and Recreation managed lands. The key is knowing
where you are parking or driving.
To know where federal lands are you need to purchase a national forest or national park map which
will have a color code showing jurisdictional boundaries.
You don’t need a pass to drive on any national forest. A recreation pass is required for parking at
many national forest day use sites, boat launches or trailheads in Oregon and Washington. These passes
are interchangeable between vehicles owned by the pass purchaser. You can also purchase the
Interagency Annual Pass which is good for any vehicle you are operating across the U.S. including
national forests, national grasslands, national parks, national monuments, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service,
Bureau of Land Management, and Bureau of Reclamation lands. These passes don’t include camping
fees.
So, before heading to the woods make sure you know where you are going (state vs. federal land).
Stop by your local ranger station to purchase a map.

UPCOMING COUNTY & STATE ROAD WORK: Highway 2/Tumwater Canyon Bridge Replacements.
The Chiwaukum Creek, Wenatchee River, and Drury Canyon Creek Bridges were originally built for highway
use between 1936 and 1937. Over the years, an increase in traffic volumes, truck sizes, and traffic speeds have
rendered the bridges insufficient for both structural integrity and width. WSDOT will replace these bridges
with wider, stronger, and easier to maintain concrete structures.
9-16-2011 Okanogan- Wenatchee National Forest Recreation Report
page 24 of 27
How Will It Be Accomplished?
In order to speed up construction and limit impacts to traffic, WSDOT will construct US Highway 2 in a
new location from milepost 89.14 to 90.70. The new location will allow the Chiwaukum Creek Bridge
and Wenatchee River Bridge to be built in one stage away from highway traffic. Once the new bridges
and highway are complete, the old bridges will be removed and the old highway will be planted with
native trees and grasses.
Timeline
Construction activities will start in August of 2011 with construction of the actual bridges starting in
September of 2011. The new bridges and highway should be open to traffic sometime during the spring of
2013.
Traffic Impacts
For the most part, highway users can expect single lane flagger controlled traffic during daytime work
hours with unrestricted use of the highway after work hours and on weekends. Between August 2011 and
September 2013 the WSDOT Private Contractor will be allowed to close Highway 2 for a total of 15
work week days. Such highway closures will NOT be allowed from Noon on Friday to 8 p.m. Sunday. It
is anticipated that 5 highway closure days will be used to replace the Drury Canyon Creek Bridge. The
Chumstick Highway will be used as a detour during the closures. The existing river access on the west
end of the Wenatchee River Bridge will be closed while the Wenatchee River Bridge is under
construction.
