Biome Project – Teacher Notes This project could be presented by students in any of several ways: Paper Mobile PowerPoint presentation Cube (each side with different info) Poster Etc. Skit Determine ahead of time what you will have your students do and have appropriate supplies ready. Projects can be individual or small groups Make sure students have research materials available – textbook, library books, and/or computer internet sites If students present projects to the rest of the class, make sure students who are watching the presentations are involved in some way such as: Taking notes (EX: Biomes of the World Content Frame – in Explain section of Curr. Doc.) Filing in cards or slips to provide feedback such as: 2 great things about this project…, 1 thing that could be improved… Biome Project Populations of plants and animals grow, remain stable, or vanish, depending in part on climate conditions such as temperature and rainfall. These conditions also affect the structure of food webs and the flow of nutrients. An environment is a combination of physical and biological factors that influence life. Physical environmental factors, called abiotic factors, are the area’s climate, the type of soil and its acidity, and the availability of nutrients. Biological environmental factors, called biotic factors, include all the living things with which an organism might interact. In the natural world, a combination of biotic and abiotic factors is called an ecosystem. An ecosystem is a collection of organisms – producers, consumers, and decomposers-interacting with each other and with their physical environment. Ecosystems identified by their climax communities are called biomes. Listed below are the Earth’s 6 major terrestrial and 4 major aquatic biomes. Terrestrial biomes tundra tropical rain forest desert grassland temperate deciduous forest taiga Aquatic biomes open water fresh water estuaries rocky intertidal For your project you will need to select one of the biomes to research. Find the following information: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. a drawing or picture of the biome a list or description of the vegetation found there, include at least 2 drawings or pictures a list of generic plant adaptations .a list or description of the animals found there, include at least 2 drawings or pictures a list of generic animal adaptations the annual precipitation and average temperature (graph of this is best) a map of the world and/or the U.S. with biome identified Rubric: Points possible a drawing or picture of the biome a list or description of the vegetation found there at least 2 drawings or pictures of vegetation in biome a list of generic plant adaptations in biome a list or description of the animals found in biome at least 2 drawings or pictures of animals found in biome a list of generic animal adaptations in biome the annual precipitation and average temperature of biome a map of the world and/or the U.S. with biome identified Overall neatness and effort 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 Points received
