NZQA registered unit standard 281 version 5 Page 1 of 3 Title Perform basic extrusion process operations Level 1 Purpose Credits 4 People credited with this unit standard are able to: identify and take precautions against operation hazards; perform extrusion process operations; identify plastics, scrap and waste materials, and demonstrate material granulating and scrap and waste material separation; in accordance with enterprise procedures. This unit standard is to enable entry level people to perform basic process operations in an extrusion operation. Classification Plastics Processing Technology > Extrusion Available grade Achieved Entry information Recommended skills and knowledge Unit 23128, Demonstrate basic knowledge of plastics production processes and materials. Explanatory notes Definitions Enterprise – an organisation where training and/or assessment is taking place, and/or where the trainee is employed. Enterprise procedures – actions which comply with the policies, systems, and directives in a particular enterprise. Enterprise procedures must comply with the requirements of the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, and subsequent amendments. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Identify and take precautions against operation hazards in accordance with enterprise procedures. Evidence requirements 1.1 The dangers of heating plastics materials in an extruder are identified. Competenz SSB Code 101571 New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 NZQA registered unit standard Range 1.2 281 version 5 Page 2 of 3 dangers include but are not limited to – burns, fumes, molten material, pressure build up, thermal degradation. Hazards and harm are identified for machine, purging, hand tools, ancillary equipment, product, and plastics materials, and precautions are taken. Outcome 2 Perform extrusion process operations in accordance with enterprise procedures. Evidence requirements 2.1 The extrusion process is described in terms of the items of equipment on the line, the purpose of the equipment, and the sequence of their operation. Range equipment may include – payoff, extruder, diehead assembly, sizing, cooling, haul off, marking, measuring, testing, cutting, coiling, belling; evidence is required for at least six items of equipment. 2.2 Raw material is loaded, with no damage to plant, personnel, or material. 2.3 Basic extrusion operations are performed, and production is recorded. Range 2.4 basic extrusion operations may include – product removal, product inspection, product finishing, product packaging, scrap processing; evidence is required for at least four operations. The emergency stop locations on the extruder and ancillary equipment are identified, and emergency stopping of the extrusion line and ancillary equipment is described. Outcome 3 Identify plastics scrap and waste materials, and demonstrate material granulating and scrap and waste material separation in accordance with enterprise procedures. Evidence requirements 3.1 The purpose and operation of plastics granulating equipment are described. 3.2 Plastics material granulating is demonstrated wearing the correct personal safety equipment. Range Competenz SSB Code 101571 safety equipment includes but is not limited to protection of – ears, eyes, hands. New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 NZQA registered unit standard 3.3 Hazards and harm associated with the use of plastics granulating equipment are described. hazards include but are not limited to – personal injury, material contamination, granulator damage. Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards. Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards. Requirements for consent to assess and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this standard are outlined in the Consent and Moderation Requirements (CMR).
