NZQA registered unit standard 287 version 5 Page 1 of 3 Title Perform process operations for blown film extrusion Level 1 Credits 4 Purpose People credited with this unit standard are able to: identify and take precautions against blown film extrusion operation hazards; perform blown film extrusion process operations; and identify and handle scrap and waste plastic materials used in blown film extrusion. Classification Plastics Processing Technology > Blown Film Extrusion Available grade Achieved Entry information Recommended skills and knowledge Unit 23128, Demonstrate basic knowledge of plastics production processes and materials. Explanatory notes 1 Definitions Enterprise – an organisation where training and/or assessment is taking place, and/or where the trainee is employed. Enterprise procedures – actions which comply with the policies, systems, and directives in a particular enterprise. Enterprise procedures must comply with the requirements of the Health and Safety in Employment Act, 1992. 2 Films applicable to this unit standard are those produced from general purpose polymers such as low density polyethylene or linear low density polyethylene or high density polyethylene. 3 For assessment, the performance of all the evidence requirements must take place in accordance with enterprise procedures. Competenz SSB Code 101571 New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 NZQA registered unit standard 287 version 5 Page 2 of 3 Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Identify and take precautions against blown film extrusion operation hazards. Evidence requirements 1.1 The dangers of heating plastics materials in an extruder are identified and precautions are taken. Range 1.2 dangers – molten material, burns, fumes. Hazards and harm from machine, hand tools, ancillary equipment, product, plastics materials, and purging are identified, and precautions are taken. Outcome 2 Perform blown film extrusion process operations. Evidence requirements 2.1 The equipment on the blown film extrusion line is identified, and the purpose, and the sequence of their operation are explained in terms of the blown film extrusion process. Range equipment includes but is not limited to: extruder, die, air ring, tower, bubble collapsing frame, top nip assembly, winder, screen changer, resin handling equipment. 2.2 Simple roll changing is performed. 2.3 Extrusion operations are performed and records are maintained. Range 2.4 extrusion operations may include – product removal, product finishing, product packaging. Quality inspections are carried out, recorded, and reported. Range visual and surface defects include – gels, die lines, scratches, haze, opacity, fish eyes; measurements – under or over gauge; surface treatment. 2.5 Raw materials are verified against job specifications and are loaded without damage to plant or material, or injury to self or other personnel. 2.6 The emergency stop locations on the film extrusion line and ancillary equipment are identified and emergency stopping of the film extrusion line and ancillary equipment is described. Outcome 3 Competenz SSB Code 101571 New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 NZQA registered unit standard 287 version 5 Page 3 of 3 Identify and handle scrap and waste plastic materials used in blown film extrusion. Evidence requirements 3.1 Scrap and waste plastic materials are identified. 3.2 Scrap and waste plastic materials are weighed, recorded, and placed in bins. Please note Providers must be granted consent to assess against standards (accredited) by NZQA, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment. Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards. Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards. Requirements for consent to assess and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this standard are outlined in the Consent and Moderation Requirements (CMR). The CMR also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for tutors and assessors, and special resource requirements.
