Sentence Functions
A sentence is a group of words that has a subject and a verb and expresses a complete
thought. Sentences can be classified according to what they do—that is, according to
their function or purpose. Notice that every sentence begins with a capital letter and
ends with a punctuation mark. The kind of punctuation mark that is used depends on
the function of the sentence.

B. Writing Application: Write a brief paragraph about any of the poems in your
textbook. In your paragraph, use at least one of each kind of sentence. Write a D above
each declarative sentence, Int above each interrogative sentence, Imp above each
imperative sentence, and E above each exclamatory sentence. Be sure to capitalize and
punctuate each sentence correctly.
