Sentences can be classified according to what they do—that is, according to their function or purpose. Notice that every sentence begins with a capital letter and ends with a punctuation mark. The kind of punctuation mark that is used depends on the function of the sentence. Type Declarative Interrogative Imperative Exclamatory Function and End Punctuation makes a statement; ends with a period asks a question; ends with a question mark gives an order or a direction; ends with a period or an exclamation point expresses strong emotion; ends with an exclamation point Example These poems are interesting.
