We will focus on the types, and their mechanism of action. Human and veterinary pathologists have much in common in regards to training and procedures, but our diagnostic goals sometimes differ. The basic functional units of a placenta, techniques of grossing and description will be discussed. A brief background, a synopsis of the chemistry involved, and the evolution of panels will be included. Attention will be given to the proper receipt and handling of specimens in the gross room to ensure optimal IHC staining. Examples of how specific panels are use to type very grave and difficult cases will be discussed. 2:00-2:15PM BREAK 2:15-3:15PM Handling of Intraoperative Neurosurgical Specimens— Recently Encountered Pitfalls Brian H. Le, M.D., Pathologist, Reading Hospital and Medical Center – Reading, PA These cases illustrate different handling techniques that have given rise to discrepancies in intraoperative and final diagnoses. Strategies to minimize such discrepancies will be discussed.
