I. COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is an exploration into charted and uncharted doctrines for sinners and
the sinned-against. We will develop and compare major doctrines for both groups,
comprising the themes of sin and woundedness (han), guilt and shame, guilt-anger and
shame-anger, repentance and resistance, forgiveness and forgivingness, justification and
justice, holiness (sanctification) and healing, and entire sanctification and jubilee. Sinners
need to pursue salvation and the sinned-against yearn for healing or liberation. Using the
Bible as our primary source, we will critically evaluate major doctrines from theological,
psychological, sociological, & philosophical aspects, and will make efforts to construct
rather holistic biblical doctrines of salvation and healing from the perspectives of sinners
and the sinned-against.
This seminar is to study the Bible from a perspective of the sinned against,
exploring uncharted theological ideas for them. We will compare major doctrines for
sinners with their counterparts for the sinned against, induding the themes of sin and
woundedness (han), guilt and shame, guilt-anger and shame-anger, repentance and
resistance, forgiveness and forgivingness, justification and justice, holiness
(sanctification) and healing, and Christian perfection and jubilee. Sinners need to pursue
salvation and the sinned-against yearn for healing or liberation. Using the Bible as our
primary source, we will critically treat major theological themes from psychological,
sociological, philosophical, and medical aspects and will make an effort to construct
rather holistic biblical doctrines of salvation for sinners and healing processes for the
sinned-against.

V. TEACHING STRATEGIES:
A. The delivery methods of instruction will be mostly lectures, discussions, web
resources, PowerPoint presentations, and email messages.

VII: SEMINARY STANDARDS
A. Inclusive language
a. United Theological Seminary has an official policy regarding the use
of Inclusive Language. The policy may be found in the Seminary
Catalog and further explained in the Student Handbook. If you have
specific questions, please see me.
B. Academic Integrity
a. Student integrity regarding all work assigned in this class is a basic
expectation of the Seminary community. A detailed policy regarding
what constitutes a violation of academic integrity can be found in the
Student Handbook.
C. Online Confidentiality
a. One of the highlights of the online classroom is that students can draw
from the experiences shared during class discussions and in written
work. However, it is imperative that students do not share information
that is confidential, privileged, or proprietary in nature. In addition,
students are expected to honor the privacy and confidentiality of their
classmates by not disclosing online conversations with those outside of
the classroom.
VIII: USING ONLINE RESOURCES
For information about how to access Blackboard and where to find help if you
need it may be found on the seminary website at
http://www.united.edu/academics/onlinelearning/ . Help guides are also available
in the student computer lab and in the Student Handbook.
IX. METHOD OF DETERMINING FINAL GRADE:
A. COURSE ASSIGNMENTS:
1. Each student will make a class presentation on a theme selected from sin, han,
guilt, shame, guilt-anger, shame- anger, repentance, resistance, forgiveness,
forgivingness, justification, justice, holiness (sanctification), healing, entire
sanctification, and jubilee (presentation: 10-15 minutes and discussion 10
minutes). It may be an outline of one's own research paper. Independent research
is encouraged.
2. Each student will turn in a research paper on the same theme of his/her class
presentation or on a different one (12-20 pgs). Construct your own position after
discussing others’. Adhere to the guidelines of Vyhmeister’s Quality/Research Papers.
This must be typewritten and double-spaced. Due date: December 11th (email copy) and
December 13th (hard copy). A late paper will be downgraded. The criteria of grading:
depth of research, originality, creativity, organization, clarity, logical coherency, and
class presentation.
3. On reading assignments and lecture contents, one group oral exam will be given (Nov.
29th). I will distribute a guideline sheet for preparation before the oral exam. You will
turn in your notes of preparation after the exam. This exam is only for pass or fail.
4. Class attendance, preparation of required reading, and substantive participation
in class discussion are expected. Substantive participation means that you analyze,
digest and question the subject matter presented by the instructor (through
lectures, reading assignments and research) and your classmates. You are
encouraged to constructively challenge your own and your classmates'
perspectives.
5. If anyone should miss a class session, please notify the instructor and submit a
summary of that day’s reading assignments (4-5 pgs, single space).
B. Method of Determining Grade:
What is the rubric by which the assignments will be assessed for the semester
grade?
The grade will be calculated in the following way:
Class reading preparation & Contributions
Class presentation
Semester Paper
Oral Exam
Total
