SIN, SALVATION, WOUNDNESS (HAN), AND HEALING SYLLABUS Fall 2008 Directed Study aspark@united.edu THE 226P Andrew Sung Park 427-9116 I. COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is an exploration into charted and uncharted doctrines for sinners and the sinned-against. We will develop and compare major doctrines for both groups, comprising the themes of sin and woundedness (han), guilt and shame, guilt-anger and shame-anger, repentance and resistance, forgiveness and forgivingness, justification and justice, holiness (sanctification) and healing, and entire sanctification and jubilee. Sinners need to pursue salvation and the sinned-against yearn for healing or liberation. Using the Bible as our primary source, we will critically evaluate major doctrines from theological, psychological, sociological, & philosophical aspects, and will make efforts to construct rather holistic biblical doctrines of salvation and healing from the perspectives of sinners and the sinned-against. This seminar is to study the Bible from a perspective of the sinned against, exploring uncharted theological ideas for them. We will compare major doctrines for sinners with their counterparts for the sinned against, induding the themes of sin and woundedness (han), guilt and shame, guilt-anger and shame-anger, repentance and resistance, forgiveness and forgivingness, justification and justice, holiness (sanctification) and healing, and Christian perfection and jubilee. Sinners need to pursue salvation and the sinned-against yearn for healing or liberation. You will turn in your notes of preparation after the exam. This exam is only for pass or fail. 4. Class attendance, preparation of required reading, and substantive participation in class discussion are expected. Substantive participation means that you analyze, digest and question the subject matter presented by the instructor (through lectures, reading assignments and research) and your classmates. You are encouraged to constructively challenge your own and your classmates' perspectives. 5. If anyone should miss a class session, please notify the instructor and submit a summary of that day’s reading assignments (4-5 pgs, single space). B.
