ABOUT BROOKLYN CHEST HOSPITAL
Brooklyn Chest Hospital is at the forefront of treatment for TB, one of the most pressing healthcare
challenges locally and globally. The facility has 349 beds, including 65 beds for children. Many
patients at Brooklyn Chest Hospital come from impoverished backgrounds. Some patients may
require hospitalization for up to 2 years, making this their home for a long time. Children even
attend school at the Hospital.
HEALING GARDENS
During the day patients sit outside the hospital wards for fresh air and sunshine – vital for their
healing. On this Mandela Day we want to make these outdoor areas at the hospital a more
welcoming and healing environment for patients and their families who visit. Being in a beautiful
environment and surrounded by nature can enhance dignity and a sense of wellbeing and reduce
stress and isolation.
