PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
GS 301 Instructional Uses of Technology (Spring 2008) Duke University. Designed to
provide future faculty across disciplines with opportunities to develop competence with
current, pedagogically effective uses of technology in the university classroom. Topics
include introduction to using technology in teaching; creating course web pages; effective
in class presentations; and communication and interactivity tools.
GS 305 The College Teaching Practicum (Spring 2008) Duke University. The main
focus of this course is to provide future faculty with the opportunity to give teaching
demonstrations that are video recorded. Additional topics include very practical concerns
for teaching such as: classroom management, using groups in class, facilitating
discussion, active learning, and visual aids.
Neuro-Developmental Disorders: Unraveling the Tapestry (March 2008) Health
Education Network. A one day workshop reviewing Neuro-Developmental Disorders
designed to enhance participants’ knowledge and skills to better serve their neuro-diverse

EDUC 257 College Teaching (Fall 2007) University of North Carolina. Designed to

GS 302 Introduction to College Teaching (Spring 2007) Duke University. Designed for
Ph.D. students in any department or program at Duke who want to improve their teaching
skills or who intend to pursue tenure-track faculty positions in higher education.
Participants learn research-based principles and strategies of effective course design and
teaching, and ground their philosophy of teaching on educational research as reflected in
the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) movement in higher education. Topics
include: models of course design, approaches to learning styles, college students, writing
learning objectives and a learning-centered syllabus, perspectives on critical thinking,
teaching methods, grading rubrics, classroom assessment techniques, and other general

workshop by Dr. George Gopen who holds both a J.D. and a Ph.D. from Harvard and has
taught writing for the past 30 years. Since 1978 he has acted as a writing consultant to
major corporations, law firms, and government agencies, specializing in both legal and
scientific prose. His faculty workshops have changed participants' writing habits

will provide focused presentations on current tools for the genome sciences including
genotyping, sequencing and microarrays, as well as their application to clinical research
and medicine. The goal of this series is to enable researchers to make the most of
available genome technologies and data in their own studies and practice.
