Description, justification and technical
parameters
i. To improve the genetic potential of Dhanni,Lohnani & Dajal
breeds of cattle.
ii. To improve beef production potential in the indeginous
breeds of cattle.
iii. Capacity building of livestock keepers and professionals for
enhancing productive performance of animals.
(a) Introduction:
The economy of Islamic Republic of Pakistan is primarily
driven by the service & commodity producing sector with
manufacturing and Agriculture. Livestock is Sub-sector of
Agriculture and increasingly becoming a very important sector
of national economy, contributing even more then all the
agriculture crops combined. It is contributing 55.5% in value
addition & almost 11.88% to GDP which is higher than the
contribution made by the crop sector. Livestock & Dairy
Development Department strive to ensure growth and
development of livestock sector in the province thus
contributing to national food security, economic uplift, rural
development, poverty alleviation, employment generation &
foreign exchange earning.
The activities of this sub-sector account is very important as
30-35 million rural population is engaged for their livelihood
with it. Whereas, percentages share in visible exports is
around 13%.
The Livestock department, Punjab established various
institutions, formations/directorates at provincial levels.
Livestock centers for research, production research, breeding,
1
training and education of VA’s as well as of the farmers were
established. Hospitals and dispensaries for treatment and
caring of the health of animals and poultry had also been
established. Due to all these efforts along with agriculture
policies, programs, developmental plans & projects, the
production of livestock and productivity increased, thereby,
increasing the per capita consumption. Even production of
livestock was surplus for export to earn the foreign exchange.
However, the special attention was not paid for the
conservation and development of local breeds of either
buffalo or cattle for the production of meat and milk. Recently,
BRI (Pattoki) and RCCSC (Jhang) have been established for the
said purpose for buffalo breeds and Sahiwal. Though the
directorate of BLPRI was established in 1987 but the special
attention has not been paid on conservation and development
of Dhanni, Dajal & Lohani for beef production. Hence, the
project has been formulated for conservation of these
valuable cattle breeds through genetic improvement by the
involvement of centuries old private breeders of the area.
(b) Importance:
The Dhanni, Dajal & Lohani are being reared at farmers’
level for (i) draught power (ii) race (iii) haulage (iv) prestige (v)
milk (vi) meat etc. This provides social security to the farmers
at the time on the marriage, birth, death and other
ceremonies. Dhanni, Dajal & Lohani are being reared on
undulated grazing areas and meadows at farmer level. The
original and natural habitat of Dhanni, Dajal & Lohani is
Pothohar Tract of Punjab, DG Khan and DI Khan respectively.
Pakistan is lacking in true beef breeds. As these breeds have
good beef production potential so the (i) conservation, (ii)
propagation, (iii) improvement (iv) development of Dhanni,
Dajal & Lohani will ensure to increase in production and
productivity of meat. Dhanni & Dajal breeds fetch more price
to the farmers when sold at the eve of Eid-Ul-Azha due to its
beauties of body points. Whereas, Lohani breed is famous for
its meat quality due to good marbling and juiciness in its
carcass. The meat is consumed by the public happily when
culled and especially sacrifice at Eid-ul-Azha. Overall, these
animals increases and improves the Socio-Economic life of the
farmers by converting the little inputs (Feed) into good quality
meat.
(c) Scope:
The project activities will be limited to Dhanni in Tehsils
Fateh Jang and Pindi Gheb of District Attock as mentioned
under 2-Location. The performance data will be recorded on
animals kept at the farmers’ level as well as at BLPRI.
Conservation center at BLPRI and “Conservation Sub-Center”
will be established at Tehsil level headed by VO (Conservation)
along with field staff under the administrative control of
Director BLPRI through PD (Conservation), the head of
Conservation Center. One room each at CVH (THQ) Fatehjang
and Pindigheb will be utilized for carrying out different project
2
activities. The registration of 3000 Dhanni will be carried out in
Fateh jang and Pindi Gheb tehsils.
Whereas, the productive and reproductive performance data
of Lohani and Dajal breed will be maintained on the herd at
BLPRI, Kherimurat and L.E.S. Fazilpur respectively. Hence,
Dhanni, Dajal & Lohani will be (i) conserved, (ii) propagated,
(iii) improved and (iv) developed for meat production and also
for research purposes. This way the spoilage of Dhanni, Dajal
& Lohani – a national and valuable asset would be saved in its
original genotype in its original habitat. To achieve the
purposes mentioned above, the farmers keeping Dhanni, Dajal
& Lohani will be registered and relevant records will be kept at
VO (Conservation) level at BLPRI and L.E.S. Fazilpur. A
prescribed “Herd Book” will be maintained by Breeder
Association, under the guidance of respective project staff.
The data on all the aspects especially about genotype will be
analyzed by the experts from the department of Animal
Breeding & Genetics, PMAS Arid Agriculture University
Rawalpindi & other Research Institutions on Nucleus Herds of
Dhanni ,Dajal and Lohani will be maintained at BLPRI,
Kherimurat as well as at LES Fazilpur.
B- JUSTIFICATION: The special attention has not been paid for conservation of
Dhanni, Dajal & Lohani breeds due to the reasons (i) poor
economic condition of the farmers led to the crossbreeding of
Dhanni, Dajal & Lohani for short term economic benefit for
milk. This way the original traits of Dhanni Dajal & Lohani
breeds were deteriorated. (ii) The deterioration of Dhanni,
Dajal & Lohani breed was also due to motivation of farmers to
produce more milk through crossbreeding instead of genetic
conservation. (iii) No efforts have been made at any level to
explore the beef potential of these breeds. Due to the
circumstances mentioned above, the conservation,
development, propagation and improvement of Dhanni, Dajal
& Lohani is the dire need of the time at farmers’ level. To
preserve the genetic resources of above mentioned breeds,
the project is being proposed by the department.

--All the requirements of the project are available in the market
for the supply of the products and by-products
Out of ADP of livestock sector, the admin approval of the
project will be issued by the competent authorities.
Subsequently, the Administrative Approval of up coming years
will be issued as per schedule of Finance Department
Implementation of this programme will provide a good
number of high EBV bulls and use to semen for wider
distribution of superior germ plasm to improve production of
Dhanni, Lohani & Dajal population in its home-tract
By utilizing good quality breeding males and better livestock
interventions milk & beef will be increased, moreover this will
also increase in the income of the institute as well as the
adjoining farmers who will adopt these new interventions.
The conservation and the development of the Dhanni, Dajal &
Lohani will definitely provide the benefits and social security
to the registered farmers and also it will create the positive
effects on the other farmers. The Dhanni rearing at farmers’
level will definitely ensure the (i) draught power (ii) race (iii)
haulage (iv) prestige (v) milk (vi) meat etc. This provides social

security to the farmers at the time on the marriage, birth,
death and other ceremonies. In addition to the said benefits
and social security, the rearing of Dhanni, Dajal & Lohani will
also provide other benefits and ensure other multiple social
securities and activities
It will create employment in the government sector for the
qualified professionals (officer and supervisors), ministerial
staff, skilled and non-skilled labor as given in project staff.
Despite this employment generation, it will also create
number of employments in the private sector involved in the
various activities like manufacturing and supply of ingredients
needed for feeding of the animals, construction work,
furniture and fixture, stationary etc. In short, this will create
huge number of activities and thereby employment in the
public and private sector.
The commencement and implementation of the project will
provide vertical expansion rather horizontal as quality animals
will enhance per unit productivity and less methane will be
produced by the livestock which will create healthy impacts
on the environment. Moreover, improvement of the soil
texture and structure thereby increasing its fertility for more
vegetation i.e., crops, grasses, shrubs, herbs, trees, fruits etc
increasing the fodder and forage for the animals and also
grains, fruits and vegetables for the use of human beings. The
rearing of animals and increasing vegetation as mentioned
above will have multiple healthy effects on the environment (i)
Improvement of atmospheric conditions and increase in
oxygen for all living things around (ii) This will also improve
echo-system and its food chains (iii) Overall health
improvement of the human beings, plants and animals
If the implementation of the project is delayed due to nonavailability of funds or paucity of funds (provision of short
funds against the proposed) will negatively affect the
achievements of the project targets, also increase the cost and
liable to be negatively affect the viability of the project due to
fast changing technologies, techniques and innovations. In nut
shell, the delay will increase the cost of the project manifold
and it will have a set back and negative multiplier effects on
the benefits of the project in connection with the conservation
of Dhanni, Dajal & Lohani employment (public and private),
economic activities, social benefits and security,
environmental activities etc
