GOVERNORS’ PROFILES: Mrs Sarina Wickens Foundation Governor – Appointed 01/09/2009 Sarina has been a Foundation Governor at St Mary’s Primary School since 1999. She has three children, one of whom has been through the school and two who are currently pupils. Sarina is committed to Catholic education and fully supports the ethos of our school. Sarina works as a nurse in the community, and family is central to her life. Currently Sarina is Chair of Governors, working alongside the school to raise standards and to provide the education our children deserve. Over the years she has undertaken many roles and she has a strong sense of the strategic view needed to move the school forward. The role of Chair of Governors is a commitment that Sarina takes very seriously. (September 2012) Mr Jamie Dobson Parent Governor – Elected 25/06/2010 Jamie has been a Parent Governor since August 2010. He has two children at St Mary’s, and another child who is currently below school age. Jamie was elected in September 2011 as Vice-Chair of the Governing Body. Jamie is also the Chair of Resources Committee following election in October 2011. He also has a particular interest in the building improvement works, having been working in Affordable Housing for over 10 years – initially in Housing Management but for the past seven years as a Project Manager representing the client on all aspects of new-build housing developments from inception to completion. In the limited spare time that he has, Jamie enjoys running and going to the gym. (October 2012) Mrs Anne Jarman Foundation Governor – Appointed 01/12/2008 Anne is a retired primary school teacher. Her three children all attended St Mary’s and two grandchildren are now pupils at the school. Anne has been a parishioner of St Mary of the Angels since the early 1980s when the family moved to Worthing, and Anne was part of the Liturgical team under several Parish Priests. One of Anne’s main roles as a Governor is ensuring that the school’s Catholicity and Ethos is maintained and apparent throughout the school. (October 2011) Mr Stephen Clarke Associate Member – Appointed 13/12/2010 Stephen is a family man with two grown up daughters. He retired to Worthing in 2009, at which time he also became a grandfather to twins. Stephen had a career in banking, taking early retirement at the age of 50 when a Senior Manager in charge of two branches within the Kingston/ Croydon area. Stephen then became a bursar and company secretary at a co-educational independent school for 2½– 13 year olds before finally stopping work at the end of the 2009-2010 academic year. Stephen has a wide experience and knowledge in the financial and educational sphere, with dealings in aspects of legal, budgeting, personnel and premises. Stephen is an Associate Member of the Governing Body, appointed in December 2010 with a particular emphasis towards supporting and assisting the Governing Body in financial aspects. (October 2012) Mrs Terry Formoy Staff Governor – Elected 01/02/2011 Terry is a Staff Governor who is employed at St Mary’s as a Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) currently working with EYFS and Year 1/2 pupils. Terry is also a parent of a pupil at the school. As a Governor, Terry is a member of the Governing Body’s Provision Committee. Her role focuses on the aspects of Equality, Community Cohesion, Disability/Accessibility and PSHCE. (October 2012) Miss Lorna Lee Associate Member – Appointed 01/02/2011 Lorna joined St Mary’s as an Associate Member of the Governing Body in February 2011, primarily to support with Human Resources and policies. As a former pupil, Lorna has a strong affinity with St Mary’s and is pleased to have the opportunity to contribute to the running of the school. Lorna has worked in Human Resources for the last six years, predominately within further and higher education. Lorna has recently taken on the role of Link Governor, which involves identifying training needs and providing information on learning and development activities to increase the effectiveness of the governing body. She is also a member of the Governing Body’s Resources Committee and the Equal Opportunities Working Party. (October 2011) Mr Joe Sacco Foundation Governor – Appointed 26/09/2011 Although Joe attended St Mary’s in the early 1970s he has not had any subsequent involvement with the school until his son started last year. Joe is a director of a vehicle-leasing company based in Arundel, providing company cars and vans for businesses. Joe has been with the company, which has many varied clients based throughout the U.K., for ten years. Previous to this Joe managed several stores, working for Moss Bros as a store manager, and was also responsible for staff training for around 20 stores. Joe was appointed as a Foundation Governor in September 2011. (October 2011) Mr Colin Tomlinson Associate Member – Appointed 14/10/2011 Colin left the Army in February 2012 after twenty very enjoyable years. During his service he completed operational tours in Bosnia, Oman, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Northern Ireland and exercises in Cyprus, Kenya and Norway. He has undertaken a number of projects ranging from quick and high impact demolition contracts in Northern Ireland and construction tasks in Bosnia, Norway and Kuwait. He has always had an interest in training and development and worked in the Royal Engineers individual training organisation. He is now employed by Taylor Woodrow resourcing the extension of the Nottingham Tram system. His role includes overseeing recruitment, work force training and the implementation of apprenticeship programmes. Colin is the proud father of four boys, all of whom attend or have attended St Mary's; three have moved onto Secondary education and one remains. When he actually has any spare time from looking after his children he has a keen interest in football, rugby, sailing, skiing and military history. He is also studying a MBA with the Open University which he is due to complete in May 2013. Colin was appointed as the Local Authority governor in February 2012 and is looking forward to contributing to the development of St Mary's school over the next four years. (October 2012) Fr. Chris Benyon (Associate Member – Appointed July 2010) Fr. Chris is the Parish Priest at St Mary of the Angels Parish Church. When Fr. Chris joined the Parish in 2007 he became a Foundation Governor at St Mary’s C P School; however, due to ever-increasing Parish responsibilities, in July 2010 he relinquished his role as Foundation Governor in order to make way for a Foundation Governor with more time available to support the school. Fr. Chris continues to support the Governing Body as an Associate Member with a focus on our Ethos, Collective Worship and Religious Education. He also supports the school’s Spirituality, visiting regularly to speak to staff and pupils and also leading Masses and Liturgies. (October 2011) Mrs Cecilia Lewis Mrs Lewis joined St Mary’s Catholic Primary school in September 1987 as a class teacher and has always felt that it is a wonderful place for children to be nurtured and to grow. The school community works hard to ensure that it brings its Mission, Vision and Values alive by placing children first and at the centre of the school’s life and purpose. After spending a year working for the West Sussex Primary Advisory team in 2000-2001, Mrs Lewis returned as the school’s Deputy Head and Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator. Her promotion to Head Teacher in March 2009 was the most exciting time in her career and remains so. Mrs Lewis has three daughters, one of whom currently attends St Mary’s school. She and her family live in Worthing and feel part of a very special sea-side community. (October 2011)
