INFORMATION PACK 2010
Dear Sir/Madam,
Thank you for your interest in becoming a Farrier.
To become a Farrier you must complete a 4 Year Apprenticeship Course with a Master
Farrier who has a Recognised Qualification, and is a Member of the Irish Master Farriers
Association.
It is up to the Apprentice to secure a Master Farrier and to make his own arrangements
with the M.F. regarding his apprenticeship, wages, hours of work, Insurance and P.R.S.I,
accommodation etc.
I would suggest that you go on a Work Experience Trial with the M.F. for 2 weeks to give
you an insight into what the work entails and then 3 months probation,
A Leaving Certificate or a Good Junior Certificate would be advisable as a good
knowledge of Book-Keeping and Accounts, Running your own Business and dealing with
the General Public is part of the Business.
Metalwork would be an advantage as well as experience of working with horses. Also you
would need to be in Good Physical Health i.e No Back Problems.
To attend the Irish National School of Farriery School the Master and Apprentice must be
members of the Association. It is up to the Master and Apprentice to apply to the Irish
Farriery School for a position in the school, sending in a C.V. and other relevant
information to the Irish School of Farriery, Course Co-ordinator, M/s Sue Lilley, Curragh
House, Dublin Road, Kildare Town. Co. Kildare. Tel. No: 045 520765. It is advisable to
apply for a position as soon as you have served your probation. If an Apprentice is
unsuccessful in acquiring a position in the Irish Farriery School it is the responsibility of
the Master to train him/her to the required standard to sit his/her Final Exams after 4
years.
To become a member of the Irish Master Farriers Association an Application Form will
have to be filled out and passed by the Standing Committee of the Association.
Membership of the Association is as follows: Apprentice €65 Master €115.
A Lapsed Master will have to pay back-membership for each year he has lapsed up to a
maximum of 5 years.
New Masters wishing to join will need a Recognised Qualification and will have to pay 2
Years Membership.
Apprentices and Masters must be Fully Paid-Up Members of the Association.
Enclosed is a list of I.M.F.A. Members and Syllabus.
If you require more specific information please write and enquire for same.
Yours truly,
Jeremy Stanley, D.W.C.F. (Chairman)
P.S. Apprentices must register with their local Fas Office. Course Code is AT59Y
