For grades 1 – 3 boys and girls, substitutions will occur at each 5 minute interval.
For grades 4 – 8 boys and girls, the following will be used to ensure that players are
getting equal playing and sitting time. The following substitution rule will be strictly
enforced.
Each player will be assigned a roster rotation number, from 1 to the number of players on
the team (i.e. 9). Players assigned roster number 1 – 5 will start the game. At 4 minute
intervals the horn will sound and the clock will not be stopped so that players can be
substituted. Each substitution should not take more than 30 seconds. Every violation is a
time out charged to the coach. If you have no timeouts left in the half, you will be
charged with a technical. For the first substitution, players assigned roster numbers 6, 7,
8, 9, 1 will enter the game. At the next 4 minute interval the horn will sound and the
clock will again be stopped so that players can be substituted. Players assigned 2, 3, 4, 5,
6 will enter the game. This rotation will continue throughout the game. The only
exceptions to this rule are if a player is injured or has fouled out. The roster assignments
will then move up and the next player goes in. For example, if players 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 are on
the court and player 5 is injured, player 7 takes the place of player 5. At the next 4
minute interval, players 8, 9, 1, 2, 3 will enter the game. Remember, it is always the next
player. It is not coaches choice.
Players going in should be kneeling at the scorers table at least 30 seconds prior to
substitution. This will give ample time to the scorers table to check the substitution sheet
to the substitutions.
In the event that there is an overtime period, IT IS THE NEXT FIVE PLAYERS. It is
NOT coaches choice.
Each coach will supply a list of player number assignments to the referee at the scoring
table. The referee, at each 4 minute interval, will announce to each team what player
numbers are to take the court. The referee, at any time, may request assistance from the
respective coaches to ensure that the correct players have taken the court. To help
coordinate this mandate, a form has been developed to keep track of each team’s rotation.
