EBENEZER ~Great Spring Rd~ Cemetery
Visited by Members and Volunteers of
Isle of Wight Historical Society
December 3, 2003
(Revised January 19, 2004)
The cemetery is located near the intersection of the Rt. #10/258 bypass on route 655, (Great Springs Road)
about 2000 feet from route Rt. # 258. It is heavily overgrown and in many cases, leaves and branches had to be
removed to reveal the existence of a marker stone. Figure 1 depicts the cemetery layout and the sections
referred to by the letters in the table below. The annotations, “[hs] [fs] and [cs] refer to Headstone (upright),
Footstone, and Crypt stone (horizontal concrete slab). Pictures were taken of some of the tombstones … they
are annotated in the table by a number following the letter designation so that they can be correlated with the
inscriptions.
Team members were careful not to disturb gravesite artifacts and carefully worked with a soft brush using a
mixture of shaving cream and water to clean and make legible the inscriptions on the stones. Water was then
used to remove any residue from the stones.

Inscription is on a metal tag attached to a stake driven in the ground.
This grave has an unscripted footstone.
A footstone is barely visible … only a small corner is above ground.
An obelisk monument with the Family “WARD” at its base and three
