CONTENTdm Field Properties Template Prepared by Amélie Jaquet, MWDL intern On behalf of the Metadata Task Force of the UALC Digitization Committee August 2010 Revised May 2012 Most of the fields of these templates are conformed to the Mountain West Digital Library Dublin Core Application Profile but some things are adapted to CONTENTdm. The first version of the template contains only the basic elements of the Application Profile and the second version contains the same elements but also the preservation elements. MWDL Partners may choose which template version they prefer to use. METADATA FIELDS IN CONTENTDM – V.1 1 METADATA FIELDS IN CONTENTDM – V.2 2 EXPLANATIONS FIELDS ORDER: Suggested order (v.1): Title and Alternative title (when a field has refinements, they are put just after). Intellectual property: Creator, Contributor and Publisher → all the authorities are one after another and quickly visible on the record. Temporal and spatial data: Date, Temporal Coverage, Spatial Coverage Information about the content: Subject, Description, Table of Contents, Abstract We did not want to put these fields too early in the record because they are sometimes very long, and then the fields coming after them are not easy to view for the user. Information about the resource: Type, Genre, Format, Extent, Conversion Specifications Others: Language, Rights, Relation, Is Part Of, Full Text, Identifier On the second version, the preservation elements are added at the end of the record. These fields are refinements of ‘Conversion Specifications’ so that field was moved to place them all together. FIELDS REQUIRED: The fields required in the MWDL Dublin Core Application Profile are: Date Description Format Identifier Rights Subject Title Type According to the MWDL Dublin Core Application Profile, some fields are ‘Mandatory if applicable’: Conversion Specifications Creator However, CONTENTdm does not have this function. Therefore, these fields are optional but the partners should take care to fill them out. All the others fields are optional. 3 CONTROLLED VOCABULARY: The MWDL Dublin Core Application Profile recommends schemes for some of the fields. Field Contributor Creator Date Format Identifier Language Spatial coverage Subject Temporal coverage Type Scheme(s) Library of Congress Name Authority File Marc Relator Codes Library of Congress Name Authority File W3C Date Time Format profile of ISO 8601 Internet Media Type URI Uniform Resource Identifier ISO 639-3 Library of Congress Name Authority File Thesaurus of Geographic Names U.S. Geological Survey Library of Congress Subject Headings Art & Architecture Thesaurus Medical Subject Heading Library of Congress Subject Headings DCMI Type Vocabulary Thesaurus of Graphic Materials Art & Architecture Thesaurus The Metadata Task Force chose to enable the controlled vocabulary function in the field properties only for the fields with a limited list of possible terms. Lists of controlled vocabulary terms have been created for the Type field (DCMI Type Vocabulary) and the Format field (including the most-often-used terms). An additional list has been created for the Genre field and is posted at http://mwdl.org/guidelines.php. The controlled vocabulary is set to “Yes” for the Type and Format fields in the template: Type → DCMI Type Vocabulary: o Collection o Dataset o Event o Image;MovingImage o Image;StillImage o InteractiveResource o PhysicalObject o Service o Software o Sound o Text Format and masterFormat→ list of combinations selected from the IANA MIME Media Types: 4 o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o application/msword application/pdf application/vnd.ms-excel application/vnd.ms-powerpoint audio/aiff* audio/flac* audio/mp4 audio/mpeg audio/wav* audio/wma* audio/x-realaudio* image/gif image/jp2 image/jpeg image/png image/tiff image/vnd.adobe.photoshop image/vnd.djvu text/css text/csv text/plain text/html text/rtf text/xml video/avi* video/mjp2* video/mp4 video/mpeg video/quicktime video/wmv* video/x-flv* video/x-realvideo* * MIME types not yet registered in the list of Internet Media Types maintained by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) at http://www.iana.org/assignments/media-types. 5
