They will be able to apply criteria for the evaluation and adaptation of language learning materials. They will comprehend different aspects of materials development (e.g. text selection, the writing of instructions, the design and layout of a unit). They will be able to articulate the principles, objectives and procedures of materials which they produce. Relationship Participants will be able to: Net Effect Prog. Output 5 1 develop a critical understanding of current approaches to 2 materials evaluation, adaptation and design. 4 2 comprehend materials evaluation process. 2 5, 4, 4 3 evaluate language teaching materials. 2, 7, 9 5 4 comprehend language teaching materials adaptation process. 2 5, 5, 4 5 produce materials appropriate to a specific context. 2, 4, 9 5 6 articulate the principles, objectives and procedures of materials 2 which they produce. Course Description: This course focuses on the theories and principles of ELT materials design (e.g.: selecting, adapting, developing and evaluating materials) and the basic arguments for and against the use of course books in the classroom; adapting and developing materials for language teaching: adapting course book materials to particular learning needs and teaching contexts, designing teaching materials and supplementing materials parallel to the methodology, to the level and needs of the students; evaluation of materials and text books used in EFL classroom settings, language material and textbook evaluation criteria and ways to relate materials design to current ELT methodology.
