BINGHAMTON U N I V E R S I T Y S T AT E U N I V E R S I T Y OF NEW YORK Photography Assistant Professor - 10 Month Department of Art and Design State University of New York (SUNY) at Binghamton Appointment date: September 1, 2015 RESPONSIBILITIES: The Department of Art and Design at Binghamton University (SUNY) invites applications for an assistant professor, tenure-track faculty position. We seek an experienced educator in photography and related media, who is a practicing artist with an active exhibition record and/or publication record. We seek applicants who have a comprehensive understanding of the role of photography and digital technologies in contemporary art practice and the expanded, photographic field, and the ability to integrate photographic practices with other disciplines such as video, interactive media… The successful candidate will: Teach a range of photography courses at the undergraduate level: the equivalent of 18 studio hours per week as determined by the Chair each fall and spring semester Develop and maintain digital equipment/resources Maintain traditional photographic labs/equipment Participate in curriculum development Contribute to developing a strong culture of photography research and practice in the department Maintain substantial creative accomplishments in the applicant’s professional discipline, exhibiting in photography and related exhibitions, and participating in professional symposia Advise students Participate in committee work and other service to the department and the college Perform all other related activities as required A strong record of professional accomplishment, as demonstrated through portfolio, and an active exhibition/publication record are essential. The successful candidate will have extensive knowledge of digital and analog photographic processes (including but not limited to: digital capture, large-format scanning, digital processing/editing, large-format inkjet printing, and traditional processes). Additional skills in one or more of the following are required: studio lighting, video art, documentary photography, professional practices for photographers, alternative processes. The candidate will have a strong background in the history of photography and contemporary art theory and will therefore have the ability to engage students at a variety of intellectual and creative levels during critiques and within classroom work. Secondarily, candidates may be asked to develop or teach an interdisciplinary class on a topic such as photography and social practice, service learning, photography and installation, art and technology, photography and data, science and photography, photography in the environment, performance, time-based media, or issues of race, gender and representation in photography etc. This position is affiliated with the recently established Material and Visual Worlds Transdisciplinary Area of Excellence (http://www.binghamton.edu/tae/material-and-visual-worlds/index.html), which supports innovative research, scholarship, and creative work related to the roles of materiality and visuality in human culture. Under its rubric, scholars from a wide variety of disciplines seek to understand things and images as gatherings of technologies, materials, histories, and interactions extending through space and time. The search committee will include members of the Material and Visual Worlds steering committee in addition to Art and Design Department members. QUALIFICATIONS: We require an MFA in photography or equivalent terminal degree as well as three to five years’ college level teaching experience.
