POSITION DESCRIPTION Unit I POSITION TITLE: CELL OPERATOR I (SUPERABRASIVE) REPORTS TO: DEPARTMENT SUPERVISOR POSITION SUMMARY: Perform duties required to set up and operate a variety of machines to trim, cut, plane and grind stones to close tolerances where setups are repetitive and work is subject to final inspection. FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB Essential Functions A. Mixing 1. Weigh materials using various scales and according to specification or recipe for the making of bond. 2. Mix materials and continue to add any additional materials that are specified. 3. Cover or package mix and let stand until screening can be completed. 4. Screen materials to ensure that proper bond size is created. 5. Package and label material for future use. B. Stone Pressing and Cutting 1. Set up necessary machinery and presses for bond making. 2. Ensure that specified height requirements are met and make any necessary adjustments to machinery. 3. Remove completed stones and let cool if necessary; check stones to ensure specifications are met. 4. Cut the height, length and width of stones from brick following blueprint. 5. Dress diamond-cutting wheel and make minor machine adjustments to maintain accurate size. 6. Interpret part number to set up machine and make adjustments for various grit sizes and hardness. 7. Prepare diamond wheel prior to setup by making necessary changes to bring it to specification; run first piece verification to validate accuracy of setup. 8. Continuously check work for cosmetic and size control, using designated sampling plan; separate non-conforming parts and make decisions regarding disposition such as salvage, repair, scrap, etc. C. Holder Preparation 1. Obtain holders from inventory and prepare for use by sandblasting. 2. Set up sandblast equipment, parts washer, and tumblast machine. 3. Check and straighten holder per print specification. 4. Set up punch press and engraver to mark designated part information on holder. 5. Continuously check work for cosmetic and size control, using designated sampling plan; separate non-conforming parts and make decisions regarding disposition such as salvage, repair scrap, etc. Cell Operator I (Superabrasives) Page 2 D. Finishing 1. Prepare slabs for sizing and blocking using appropriate drying methods such as ovens, centrifugal spinners to prepare slabs for sizing and blocking. 2. Apply sizing mixture using air assisted spray system. 3. Block slabs according to instructions using designated adhesive. 4. Set up machine and grind designated chamfer to stone. 5. Continuously check work for cosmetic and size control, using designated sampling plan; separate non-conforming parts and make decisions regarding disposition such as salvage, repair, scrap, etc. E. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Assembly Mix adhesive per work instructions. Set up automatic machine to assemble guides and holders, making necessary adjustments. Set up automatic assembly machines, making appropriate adjustments to achieve specific bond, stamp, chamfer and/or radius. Check manual assembly fixtures for wear and send out for rework as needed. Assemble parts manually by using designated fixturing. Set up grinder and grind radius/chamfer per print specifications. Set up break-off machine and using the designated sampling plan, check parts for bond strength. Continuously check work for cosmetic and size control, using designated sampling plan; separate non-conforming parts and make decisions regarding disposition such as salvage, repair and scrap. F. 1. 2. 3. Packing Pull designated components such as guides, instructions, cartons, and inserts from inventory. Package stones per work instructions. Set up printing press and mark cartons with part number, description, and date code following instructions. 4. Continuously check work for cosmetic and size control, using designated sampling plan; separate non-conforming parts and make decisions regarding disposition such as salvage, repair and scrap. G. 1. 2. 3. Administrative Generate daily reports; check stock and status of open and planned orders using computer. Generate requisitions for purchase of tooling and supplies. Review daily order status, work schedule reports, scrap reports and react to and correct problems identified. 4. Identify and document quality problems and work with appropriate personnel to resolve. 5. Assist in the generation of annual budgets. Specific vision abilities required by this job include clarity of vision at a distance of 20 inches or less with the ability to judge distance and space relationships along with adjusting the eye to bring objects into sharp focus. POSITION QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS Education: Requires the use of high school level mathematics, including geometry and algebra, with the use of complicated drawings, precision measuring instruments; the ability to make minor modifications to equipment and CNC programs and computers to input data. Interpretation requires advanced skills knowledge and is equivalent to one to three years applied trades training. Experience: Requires a minimum of one year up to and including three years to gain sufficient experience to perform the requirements of the position.
