o Comprehension: Cause/effect, text/graphic features, sequence of
events
o Grammar: Verbs “to be”, “have”, perfect tenses
o Writing: Opinion-editorial, response to literature, persuasive
argument


Unit 1:

o Vocabulary: Domain Specific words, context clues, prefixes,
suffixes
o Oral Fluency: Phrasing, rate, accuracy, expression, intonation
o Comprehension: Story structure, sequence of events, summarize,
author’s purpose, theme, compare/contrast, infer/predict
o Grammar: Kinds of sentences, common/proper/singular/plural
nouns
o Writing: Descriptive paragraph, dialogue, short story
Unit 2:
o Phonics: Syllable types, /r/ controlled vowels, homophones
o Vocabulary: Domain Specific words, context clues, prefixes,
proverbs/adages, synonyms/antonyms
o Oral Fluency: Phrasing, rate, accuracy, expression, intonation
o Comprehension: Author’s purpose, theme, cause/effect, characters
o Grammar: Verbs, direct/indirect objects, conjunctions
o Writing: Procedural composition, compare/contrast essay,
cause/effect essay
Unit 3:
o Phonics: /r/ controlled compound words, read multi-syllabic words
with open/closed syllables
o Vocabulary: Domain Specific words, shades of meaning,
Latin/Greek roots, figurative language
o Oral Fluency: Phrasing, rate, accuracy, expression, intonation
o Comprehension: Draw conclusions, make generalizations, main
idea/details, cause/effect, fact/opinion
o Grammar: Complex sentences, direct quotations, interjections,
subject/object pronouns, verb tenses
o Writing: Research report, opinion essay
