A reading clinic is 30 minutes of direct reading instruction, with a small group, focusing on specific reading skills and strategies. Reading clinics are considered Tier II instruction. What is Tier III instruction? Tier III instruction is an additional 15-30 minutes of direct reading instruction developed to address each student’s needs. This instruction occurs 3 – 5 times per 5-day cycle. Who teaches reading interventions? All intervention groups (clinics and Tier III) are taught by teachers or highly-qualified paraprofessionals. Instruction that is delivered by paraprofessionals is planned by the reading specialists. Types of Reading Intervention Programs My Sidewalks (Early Reading Intervention and Level A) This research-based, intensive reading intervention program provides direct instruction for young readers. “My Sidewalks” addresses phonemic awareness and beginning phonics at the kindergarten and first grade levels. Corrective Reading This program provides intensive, sustained instruction to help students develop stronger decoding skills. It also helps increase students’ fluency and accuracy. This program is used with second and third grade students. Fundations “Fundations” is a systematic, sequential, multi-sensory method of teaching reading and writing skills. This program is used to teach phonics skills and strategies to all first graders and those second graders who need extra phonics support. SOAR to Success “SOAR to Success” helps our third grade students learn to apply comprehension and decoding strategies and skills as they read varying types of text. Comprehension Groups These clinics reteach and reinforce comprehension strategies that are taught during Core literacy instruction. Students have the opportunity to develop these skills and strategies with text at their level. Fluency Groups These groups work on improving students’ reading rates and accuracy. Students work on repeated readings of varying types of text, such as fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and readers theater.
