With 23 core faculty members and additional research engineers and 20 laboratories, the UIC Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering is involved in a wide variety of industries including energy, the environment, transportation, heavy equipment, biomedical engineering, consumer products and building sciences. We have partnered with small and large corporations including Abbott, Baxter Healthcare, Carrier, Caterpillar, Ford, Gas Technology
Institute, General Electric, General Motors, Goodrich, International, John Deere,
Lockheed, McDonnell Douglas, Motorola, Nissan, Pratt & Whitney, Texaco,
Trane, Volkswagen and many others. Through our specialty outreach arm, the
Energy Resources Center, we also consult with smaller businesses, cultural institutions and government agencies. Our feasibility studies, energy audits, and other services allow you to evaluate your concepts and designs more costeffectively than with competing consulting services.
Mechanical Systems Design, Solid Mechanics, and Failure Analysis
Best practices in mechanical systems design require not only fundamental grounding in mechanics, reliability, and failure at the macro-, micro-, and nanoscales, but also attention to the social setting of mechanical systems and to the decisions and dynamics of the entire design process. As an integrated industrial and mechanical engineering department, we support a holistic design approach.

Energy Systems and Environmental Quality
The transportation sector and the residential, commercial, and industrial building sector are two major end-users of energy in the United States. We do research and applications engineering in these and other areas with a particular emphasis on the built environment. This includes not only energy conservation in homes and offices but also energy-intensive industrial processes. In addition to helping energy conversion companies with product development, we also perform lowcost industrial energy audits and feasibility studies for various industries. Our research professors are joined by our hands-on professional engineers, architects, and economists in our 30-year-old Energy Resources Center.
