Page 1 of 2 KENT STATE UNIVERSITY CLASSIFICATION SPECIFICATION Developed for Equal Opportunity CLASS TITLE: Crime Prevention Specialist Pay Grade: 39A BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY: Identifies crime risks on campus, and develops crime prevention strategies and programs and makes recommendations; presents information concerning crime prevention to campus community. CHARACTERISTIC JOB DUTIES: Examines departments and grounds for main campus and regional campuses; identifies security risks; makes recommendations for improvements to reduce risks. Develops crime prevention strategies and programs. Provides training in crime response procedures to University employees. Develops and delivers presentations on crime prevention topics to main campus and regional campuses' employees and students. Analyzes crime patterns, presents findings, and makes recommendations to Police Operations Division personnel. Serves as liaison with other law enforcement agencies and media to discuss crime related issues on campus. May train and direct student or temporary employees; may participate in training new employees. Performs related duties as required. REPORTS TO: Designated supervisor WORKING CONDITIONS: Occasionally exposed to variable weather conditions; requires light physical effort (e.g., stooping, bending, walking, light lifting) and on- and off-campus travel. 3/01/92 Crime Prevention Specialist--page 2 QUALIFICATIONS: Required Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent plus two years of post-secondary education in criminal justice or related field (or equivalent training or experience which provides comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities). A minimum of one year experience in criminal justice system. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 1. Ability to identify and formulate solutions to security risks. 2. Ability to define problems, collect data, and draw valid conclusions. 3. Knowledge of criminal justice system. 4. Skill in interpersonal communication to effectively interact with University personnel and public in person and over the telephone (e.g., to explain crime prevention information and building issues to department heads, to share information and strategies with other law enforcement agencies and state organizations). 5. Skill in written communication (e.g., to compose speeches, correspondence, and programs). 6. Skill in public speaking. 7. Knowledge of University interdepartmental relationships. 8. Skill in public relations. 9. Knowledge of electronic alarm systems. 10. Ability to read and comprehend a variety of written material. Other Requirements: Valid Ohio driver's license.
