FEEDING COWS & OTMS – 62 averaged 126.68p or £773.31
(Commencing at 10.30am)
A grand entry of feeding and grazing cows and OTMS met a packed ringside of buyers and a
magnificent trade prevailed.
Today we saw some extreme ‘hat-racks’ which although well sold did nothing to enhance
the averages!!
Ian Stancombe sold Limousins to 169.5p - £884.79, Messrs GH Bowser Ltd sold Limousins to
167.5p - £830.80, Blues to 163.5p - £776.63, Mark Gathercole sold Blues to 164.5p - £1038,
Gary Sharp, Essex sold Simmentals to 159.5p - £1194.66, Sam Pilkington sold Charolais to

BREEDING CATTLE – 105
Today saw the Inaugural UK Breeders Official Society Sale of Pedigree and Cross bred
British Bazadaise Cattle and The Official Society Sale of Pedigree Saler Cattle
Topping the Sale of Bazadaise Cattle was Anne Orr-Ewing, Swindon, Wiltshire with a very
nice heifer and calf outfit, Foxacre Fulvia (Sept 2010) was sold with a July 2013 bull calf at
foot Foxacre Independence who in turn was to Cesar and was back in calf to the same sire.
Taking her at 3000gns was Breed Society Chairman, William Crawford, West Lothian,
Scotland.
Willie Crawford then sold a marvellous consignment of in-calf heifers selling to a top price of
2,400gns (twice), firstly Mr SH Hamplett, Stafford purchased Macford Hayley (Jan 2012),
Martin Faulconbridge then bought Macford Heidi (April 2012), William sold others at
2,200gns, 2200gns, 2,100gns, 2,100gns, 2000gns.
In the Saler Messrs Pye sold in-calf heifers to 2,000gns (twice) both to Messrs A Turner
& Sons, Grantham.
Peter and Sheila Donger sold Saler Bulls to 3,300gns. Seawell Homer (Feb 2012) by the
homebred sire Seawell Extra and out of French imported dam Aurore purchasing Homer
was Mr C Colgan, Berwick Upon Tweed.

Domino and out of Ballgrange Ella ET was snapped up at £4,300 by Newark regular Ian

and heifers (28 months) with (1 month) calves to £1,120.
STORE CATTLE – 262
A grand entry of mostly younger and smaller cattle on offer, definitely today it was evident
that feeders and grazers were paying closer attention to current prime stock returns.
Saying that quality cattle and younger long term well-bred cattle were still very well sold.
Melton Mowbray vendor Andrew Coombe sold Bazadaise cross heifers 24 months old to
£1,090 and steers to £1,080.

CALF REPORT
Auctioneer: Keith Miller
Mobile: 0780 1032847
Another excellent show in the calf department and I must say I didn’t quite know which way
trade was going to go with all doom and gloom being the attitude of talk about the finished
product but obviously with prices achieved today there was no panic with best calves dearer
on the week.
As always Ian and Steph Sharman lead the way selling Montbeliarde heifers to £470.00,
Limousin heifers at £460.00, £450.00 and £445.00 and Blue Bulls to £430.00, also Charolais
at £420.00.
Messrs Holland sold Blue Bulls to £320.00 and the Batty’s sold Limousin/Friesians Bulls at
£285.00, also Black and whites sold generally from £40.00 to £90.00.
The Stirks also sold to a decent trade with Messrs Robert Shaw selling Bazadaise heifers at
£700.00 and Bulls the same way bred to 600.00.
Messrs Westhall Lodge sold their usual load of Bulls and Limousin Steers and Heifers with
their Blue Stores selling to £490.00 and Limousin and Charolais Heifers at £100.00. Gary
Sharp sold Limousin Bulls to £530.00 and the Page’s sold Blue Heifers to £380.00. Black and
White Bulls sold better than expected with Paul Haines selling to £320.00 and David
Goodwin got to £300.00. MANY MORE REQUIRED

A reduced entry on offer today and perhaps a good job as prices were much sharper on the
week, although still a country mile off where they should/need to be!!
Again some very well bred well finished sorts on offer, at the top end some excellent
Friesians too.
However, some real cold old bulls (25-29 months) which were very difficult to place.
Back to ranting and its catching as Doug Gascoine has had a go in both the Farmers Weekly
and the Farmers Guardian recently, I would like to ask a very simple question:
Why is it several of the Irish owned Abattoirs are discounting cattle by 20p per kilo
deadweight if they are sold through a livestock market?
Cattle entered by Producers who are assured, transported to and from the auction on
assured approved hauliers and indeed ourselves who are assured as well.
There is no logical explanation only that this is another way for the processers to drive down
price – it’s as simple as this – OFFER A PRICE, doesn’t matter how low it is and should any
producer have the disrespect for the company and have the nerve to sell them in an auction
the animal will be discounted by 20p per kilo if presented at such a processer.
Our markets are assured we are policed by the Trading Standards Department and Defra
together with the Assurance Scheme inspectors – our auctions are public places, we don’t
take the shoes off horses, trim down their ears and pretend they are cattle!!
You farmers need to wake up before it’s too late – make no bones about it – they are going
to take your trousers down and smack your arse!!
If the market system is so bad for an animal to endure, then please simple as this state that
any animal can-not ever go through an Auction!!!
However, they won’t say that as they want cattle to get at the food – but when it has – they
want to control you – trade is trade, up or down, but manipulation of the trade, well that is
a different story. Rant over……..
