Again some very well bred well finished sorts on offer, at the top end some excellent Friesians too. However, some real cold old bulls (25-29 months) which were very difficult to place. Back to ranting and its catching as Doug Gascoine has had a go in both the Farmers Weekly and the Farmers Guardian recently, I would like to ask a very simple question: Why is it several of the Irish owned Abattoirs are discounting cattle by 20p per kilo deadweight if they are sold through a livestock market? Cattle entered by Producers who are assured, transported to and from the auction on assured approved hauliers and indeed ourselves who are assured as well. There is no logical explanation only that this is another way for the processers to drive down price – it’s as simple as this – OFFER A PRICE, doesn’t matter how low it is and should any producer have the disrespect for the company and have the nerve to sell them in an auction the animal will be discounted by 20p per kilo if presented at such a processer. Our markets are assured we are policed by the Trading Standards Department and Defra together with the Assurance Scheme inspectors – our auctions are public places, we don’t take the shoes off horses, trim down their ears and pretend they are cattle!! You farmers need to wake up before it’s too late – make no bones about it – they are going to take your trousers down and smack your arse!! If the market system is so bad for an animal to endure, then please simple as this state that any animal can-not ever go through an Auction!!! However, they won’t say that as they want cattle to get at the food – but when it has – they want to control you – trade is trade, up or down, but manipulation of the trade, well that is a different story.
