----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------James Phaire/Faire was born in Ireland in about 1802/18031/1807/1815 and was
a member of the Anglican Church.2
He had a relationship with Sarah [de] Chabert, who was born on St. Croix at
estate Jolly [Dolly] Hill, in about 1827/1834 and baptized in the Anglican Church.3 She
may have been the daughter of Cathrina Conton, who was born on St. Croix in about
1808 and baptized in the Lutheran Church, who in 1870 was unmarried and a washer by
profession.4
In October 1846, he was living at estate Spring Garden, Northside A Quarter,
unmarried, employed as the estate Overseer, and not serving in the militia, having been
declared an “invalid”. 5
In May 1850, he was the Manager at estate Whim, West End Quarter, and Sarah
Chabert ("Sally," Jolly Hill was there, b. c1825).6 In 1855, James Phaire and Sarah
Chabert were living at estate Grapetree Bay, East End Quarter, where he was said to be
the leaser of estate Longpoint and she the housekeeper.7 In 1857, he was living at 7 & 8
Hospital Street, Christiansted, and he was a Clerk by profession.8 At the same time,
Sarah Chabert was living with Cathrina Conton, and her [Sarah's] sons at 29b Watergut,
Christiansted, where she was listed as a Seamstress by profession.10 In 1870, Sarah

Chabert was living at 18 King's Cross Street, Christiansted with an Androna Chabert,
born on St. Croix in 1842 and possibly a sister, who was baptized in the Lutheran
Church.11

1. John Ferdinand Phaire was born on St. Croix at estate Whim, on 14 May
1850,13 and he was baptized in the Christiansted Anglican Church on 31 August 1850.14
In 1855, he was living at estate Grapetree Bay, East End Quarter with his parents and
brother.15 In 1857, he was living with his mother, grandmother, Catherina Conton and
his brothers at 2b Watergut, Christiansted.16 In 1870, he was living at 18 King's Cross
Street, Christiansted, which he owned with his brothers.17 In 1911, he was married to
Mathilda, who was born in about 1851 and was a member of the Lutheran Church.18 In
1917, he was living at 4b Queen's Cross Street, Christiansted, as a widower and was a
shoemaker by profession and had his own shop.19

2. James Emanuel Phaire was born on St. Croix at estate Bethlehem, in about
1851/1853 and was baptized in the Anglican Church.21 In 1855, he was living at estate
Grapetree Bay, East End Quarter with his parents and brother.22 In 1857, he was living
with his mother, grandmother, Catherina Conton and his brothers at 2b Watergut,
Christiansted.23 He was a shoemaker and was married in the Christiansted Anglican
Church on 5 May 1876 to Rosalind "Rosina" Hodge,24 who was born in about

1853/1854 and was a member of the Anglican Church.25 In 1876, he was listed as a
shoemaker and she as a seamstress.26 She died on 9 May 1892.27 He subsequently
married to Moedora,28 who was born on St. Croix in about 1868 and was a member of
the Lutheran Church. As of 1911, they were living at 16 Queen's Cross Street,
Christiansted, which he owned, and he was listed as a shoemaker and she as a
seamstress.29

3. William Phaire was born on St. Croix,32 on 26/28 March 1856 and was
baptized in the Christiansted Anglican Church on 31 January 1857.33 In 1857, he was
living with his mother, grandmother, Catherina Conton and his brothers at 2b Watergut,
Christiansted.34 He was married to Elgeria [Elmiria], and she was born on St. Croix in
about 1869 and was a member of the Lutheran Church.35 In 1911, he owned 33 Queen's
Cross Street in Christiansted, and his occupation was given as a Shoemaker.36 The
family was still at 33 Queen's Cross in 1917.37

4. George Emanuel [Winthrop?] Phaire was born on St. Croix39 on 18 June
1858 and baptized in the Christiansted Anglican Church in September 1858.40 He was
married to Indiana Mathilda Vogelsang, who was born on St. Croix in about 1857, the
daughter of James Hendrich Vogelsang (1818-c1880) and Mary Elisabeth (c18191896). In 1911, she was living at 13 Queen's Cross Street, Christiansted with her
unmarried sister, Mary Vogelsang.41 She was deaf and a Seamstress by profession.42 In
1917, she was living with her son Winthrop Phaire at 46 Company Street, Christiansted.43

9. James Emanuel Phaire was born on 18 April 1878 and baptized in the
Christiansted Anglican Church on 6 July 1878.51 In 1911, he was living at 21 Queen's
Cross Street, Christiansted, and he was a tailor by profession.52
10. Eugenie Eliza Phaire was born on 18 July 1880 and baptized in the
Christiansted Anglican Church on 6 November 1880.53
11. Valborg Margerita Phaire was born on 4 September 1882 and baptized in
the Christiansted Anglican Church on 20 January 1883.54
12. Wermouth [Weymouth] Merton [Morton] Phaire was born on 25 April
1887 and baptized in the Christiansted Anglican Church on 20 August 1887.55 In 1911,
he was living at 21 Queen's Cross Street, Christiansted, with his wife, Everesa Jemema
[probably born Catia], who was born on St. Croix in about 1888 and was a member of the
Lutheran Church.56

15. Pearle Phaire was born on St. Croix in about 1905.60 In 1911, she was
living at 16 Queen's Cross Street, Christiansted with her family.61
