Franklin Task Force Meeting 1/7/2010 3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. Franklin Library Notes Attendees: Brad Jorgensen, Steven Stahlberg, Connie Mancasola, Ann Baker, Shawn Shaw Vision Statement: See attached document, “Vision Statement Franklin Task Force”. Discussion Items: Development of a three (3) – four (4) year logistical plan for the Franklin campus as it pertains to the growth of the Loomis Basin Charter School: See attached document “LBCS Future (PH III) Site Plan”. Areas of Concern: 1. Campus Growth: The three year growth plan for the LBCS is as follows: 2010 – 2011, add two (2) sixth grade classes (50 students). 2011 – 2012, add two (2) seventh grade classes (50 students). 2012 – 2013, add two (2) eighth grade classes (50 students). As the LBCS grows over the next three (3) years, eventually becoming roughly the size of Franklin, will Franklin relinquish its priority in facility scheduling? 2. Cafeteria: Currently, LBCS’s students obtain pizza lunch, in the cafeteria, on Fridays. This does not currently conflict with Franklin’s lunch schedule. The increased revenue supports the LUSD’s Food Service Program. Will the cafeteria eventually be utilized to provide lunches for all of Franklin’s as well as all of LBCS’s students? What are the positives of increasing food service revenues, and what are the potential pitfalls of increasing traffic flow during the lunch period? 3. Gymnasium: There are currently 6.5 hours of after school gym time available (2:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.). Example: o Franklin 7th grade basketball team = 1.5 hours o Franklin 8th grade basketball team = 1.5 hours o LBCS 7th grade basketball team = 1.5 hours o LBCS 8th grade basketball team = 1.5 hours o Remaining time = 0.5 hours How will the gym be utilized to accommodate LBCS’s 7th and 8th grade athletic teams (e.g., boys’/girls’ basketball and volleyball)? In particular, practices and games. Will this adversely affect Franklin 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade basketball teams? Drama and other after school programs? 4. Traffic Lanes, Flow, and Access: Will the current starting/ending times be sufficient to reduce traffic congestion during drop-off and pick-up times? Will the current access points on Laird Road meet city and/or county codes as the campus builds out to an estimated 900 students by 2013? 5. Safety Drills and Evacuation Plans: Will the current safety and evacuation plans be sufficient to meet the needs of the estimated 900 students who may eventually arrive on Franklin’s campus by 2013?
