CHARGE IT! CC GETS AN EV CAR CHARGING STATION;
HELPS SUPPORT EV INFRACTURE IN COLORADO SPRINGS
Station located corner of on North Nevada Avenue, Cache La Poudre Street
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – May 13, 2013 – Colorado College is charging ahead! Now
there is no need to drive across town in search of an electric vehicle (EV) car charging
station – Colorado College has one on campus.
The new EV charging station is located at 830 N. Nevada Ave., in the parking lot on the
southwest corner of Nevada Avenue and Cache La Poudre Street, making it easily
accessible to the Colorado College and greater Colorado Springs communities. The
charging station comes courtesy of Jim Burness, who graduated from Colorado College
with degree in political science major and currently is the CEO of National Car Charging.
Burness arranged for the donation of the charging station from ChargePoint, the nation’s
largest electric vehicle charging network.
CC’s Sustainability Council allocated $2,500 for the installation cost. The funds came
from the 2012 Campus Annual Sustainability Projects Program, aimed at funding
innovative and measurable initiatives that advance the college’s sustainability plan. The
station also helps expand the electric vehicle infrastructure in Colorado.
“In combination with electricity generated from renewable sources, electric vehicles will
significantly reduce carbon emissions and play an important role in advancing smarter
grid technology. We hope our public charging station in downtown Colorado Springs will
encourage these emerging technologies on a local scale,” said Emily Wright, CC’s
sustainability coordinator.
“Our business is to intelligently charge cars, but our mission is to build an engaged and
connected global EV community,” Burness said.
The college has set a charging fee of 75 cents per hour to pay for the electricity and
ChargePoint billing fees. A one-hour charge provides approximately 10 to 20 miles of
driving distance, depending on the car.
The CC charging station has been placed on the company’s network and online map, in
order to help support the national EV charging network. A mobile app allows drivers to
locate charging stations.
There currently are 71 public charging stations of all brands in Colorado; about 50 in the
Denver area and seven in the Colorado Springs area. This is the first ChargePoint station
in Colorado Springs, joining one in Monument and more than 11,000 others on the
national ChargePoint network.
