CARBONATE MODEL, PETROLEUM SYSTEM AND VOLCANISM OF SOUTH SULAWESI Location: South Sulawesi (Makassar, Watampone, Sengkang, Toraja) Dates: September 21 - 26, 2011 Leaders: Dr. Alit Ascaria, Talisman (Sageri) Limited Dr. Bambang Priadi, Institut Teknologi Bandung Fee: IPA Prof. Div. Member US$ 2,700 Non IPA Prof. Div. Member US$ 2,800 (Inclusive of round-trip airfare Jakarta-Makassar, airport tax, ground transport, hotels, meals, refreshments, and hand-out) Field trip summary: Carbonate Model, Petroleum System and Volcanism of South Sulawesi Objective: Understand the general concepts of carbonate depositional systems, facies prediction, and sequence stratigraphy. Visualize carbonate reservoir geometries, distribution and architecture, through the examination of analogue carbonate outcrop of the Tacipi Formation for producing reservoir in sub surface (same scale and similar facies architecture). Gain an overview of two different basins i.e. the Sengkang Basin (Strike slip basin) and the Kalosi (Thrust basin), each of which have their own distinct character. Finally experience a modern carbonate environment to recognize diversity of their sedimentation processed to aid in a better interpretation for reservoir characterization. Understand the volcanic system of the Western Arm of Sulawesi, its tectonicrelated volcanism, its distribution and characterization due to the presence of carbonate formations. What we can see and learn: Petroleum system of south Sulawesi (Source rock of Malawa Formation, Reservoir rock of Tacipi Limestone, Tonasa Limestone and Walanae Formation) Carbonate facies and architecture of Eocene-Oligocene Tonasa Limestone and Upper Miocene Tacipi Formation. Type of structure form a traps i.e. strike slip fault of Kalosi and Sengkang Areas, Thrusting of Latimojong and Toraja domain. Carbonate diagenesis which controlled by tectonic and structuration. Relative sea level changes controlled carbonate facies and diagenetic. Study type of carbonate platform morphologhy to understand facies belt and reservoir distribution. Study of different volcanic products from various geological setting in different ages. The stratigraphic correlation of the wide-spread Miocene Volcanic Units. Study modern carbonate at Samalona Island west of Makassar City, learn about facies type and their distribution. Leaders: Dr. Alit Ascaria gained his PhD from the Research School of Geological and Geophysical Sciences, University of London, United Kingdom in 1997. Dissertation title: Carbonate facies development and sedimentary evolution of the Miocene Tacipi Formation, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. He is an acknowledged expert on modern and ancient carbonate systems throughout Indonesia and lectures at the Institut Teknologi Bandung, Universitas Indonesia and Universitas Pajajaran. Dr. Ascaria formely worked at PERTAMINA as a regional geologist, where he was awarded Geoscientist of the Year 2000. He is currently working at Talisman (Sageri) Ltd. Dr. Bambang Priadi is a PhD graduated from Paul Sabatier University (Toulouse III), Toulouse (France) in 1993 for his dissertation on Geochemistry and Petrology of the Tertiary-Quaternary Volcanism in Western Arm of Sulawesi (Indonesia). He is now a lecturer in Geology Department of Institut Teknologi Bandung, lecturing of geochemistry, mineralogy, geochemical exploration and is still active in research on volcanism in Indonesia, especially for Sulawesi.
