Note: the new major requirements didn’t show up in the hard copy catalog until 2013-14.
The psychology major consists of a minimum of 11 courses in five categories:
1) Foundations courses; 2) Area courses; 3) Electives; 4) Labs; and 5) Senior Work.
I. Foundations courses:
1. Introductory Psychology (PSYC 0105)
2. Statistics (PSYC 0201)
3. Research Methods (PSYC 0202).
Students are expected to complete the Statistics/Research Methods sequence by the end of the sophomore year,
and no later than the end of the junior year.
II. Area core courses:

V. Senior work: Senior work in psychology emphasizes the synthesis and integration of theory and research.
Each student must take two senior seminars (400-level courses) in psychology.

Departmental Honors in Psychology: Students who seek to graduate with departmental honors should consult
with a faculty member no later than the junior year to begin actively planning their research. The psychology
thesis requires three semesters (including Winter Term) of independent research. During the fall term of the
senior year, candidates will enroll in PSYC 0700. During the winter and spring terms, after meeting the special
requirements listed in the course description and being accepted into honors candidacy, they will enroll in
PSYC 0703. A minimum of a B+ average in psychology department courses is needed for admission to honors
candidacy. Students who complete an honors thesis in psychology can count PSYC 0703 for one of their two
senior seminar requirements provided that the seminar they take is not in the same content area as their thesis.
