Main areas of
responsibility:
1.
To work as part of a team providing technical support for the
school sport and exercise science laboratories. To organise
and assist with the setting out and preparation of laboratories
for teaching, student dissertations and research projects.
Providing assistance and advice to staff and students.
Planning workload to meet deadlines as agreed by STM and
senior technical staff.
2.
To maintain the laboratory sport, exercise and scientific
apparatus and equipment ensuring standards of calibration are
maintained to meet the requirements of the British Association
of Sport Sciences (BASES) accreditation.
3.
To provide an effective laboratory booking and equipment loan
service for staff and students, monitoring stocks and use of
consumables, maintaining records and arranging to replenish
stores and supplies.
4.
To assist with the construction and maintenance of science
and sports equipment and undertake scientific projects for the
School Technical Manager and relevant academic colleagues.
5.
To provide an efficient and effective technical service for the
school undertaking other related duties throughout the school
as directed and undertaking appropriate staff development.
6.
To maintain a safe working environment ensuring all systems
of safe working are monitored and complied with.

To work as part of a team providing technical support for

the school sport and exercise science laboratories. To
organise and assist with the setting out and preparation
of laboratories for teaching, student dissertations and
research projects. Providing assistance and advice to

1.1. To work as part of a team to ensure the laboratories are
operational and equipped for demonstrations, classes, open
days, commercial activity, and research projects. To ensure
standards and deadlines are met.
1.2. To assist staff and students, solving more complex problems or
consulting with other technical team colleagues as necessary.
1.3. To assist students with science projects and dissertations,
aiming to meet their specific technical requirements. Advising
on equipment availability and demonstrating its setup and use.
1.4. To carry out functionality checks of the instrumentation and
computer based equipment prior to issue. Logging any faults
and initiating an investigation and repair process, or providing
an alternative facility to minimise any disruption to teaching or
research
1.5. To carry out routine calibration checks on gas analysing and
other exercise and human performance instrumentation.
2.
To maintain laboratory, sport, exercise and scientific
apparatus and equipment ensuring standards of
calibration are maintained to meet the requirements of the
British Association of Sport Sciences (BASES)
accreditation.
2.1. To carry out sterilisation of respiratory apparatus including
mouth pieces, breathing tubes and Douglas bags. Ensuring
safe procedures are maintained for identification of clean
sterilised and used items.
2.2. To maintain high service standards and to undertake
preventative maintenance, to include lubrication, adjustment
and cleaning of electro mechanical equipment, such as SRM
power cranks, bicycle ergometers and treadmills. To retain
comprehensive detail of all preventative maintenance
undertaken, recording details on Excel spreadsheets.
2.3. To carry out functionality checks and calibrations on science
and computer based instrumentation, checking equipment for
faults, recording and reporting any defects, taking any
necessary action to instigate a solution or repair. Taking any
follow-up action as necessary to purchase spares and/or
isolate faulty equipment.
2.4. To carry out a scheme of Planned Preventative Maintenance
(PPM) and calibration of equipment. Produce reports to meet
Health and Safety or Professional Statutory and Regulatory
Body requirements. Initiative is required to undertake technical
background research prior to calibration to ensure validity of
procedure and methods for which templates may not be
available.
2.5. To produce and update step by step user instructions and
diagrams for scientific equipment and or sports equipment,
updating and loading of information and data to the school’s
server.
2.6. To check progress on any referred problems, instigating
solutions and keeping the user informed until the problem is
resolved.
2.7. To maintain laboratory, audio-visual or sports and general
equipment in a clean and tidy condition, making regular
preventative functionality checks, repairing or reporting any
problems that arise.
2.8. To advise senior technical staff of any maintenance issues

3.1. To operate the laboratory web based booking system and
equipment loans database, providing a reliable information
service to staff and students and to chase any overdue items.
3.2. To receive, handle, store and transport compressed gas
cylinders within the welkin laboratory complex, fitting
appropriate pressure regulators and connections to
instrumentation following all safety procedures and training
provided.
3.3. To maintain a clean and tidy environment in the laboratory
complex, workshop and storage areas.
3.4. To carry out routine sterilisation of respiratory apparatus
including mouth pieces, breathing tubes and Douglas bags.
Ensuring safe procedures are maintained for identification of
clean sterilised and used items. Maintaining clearly identifiable
records of all PPM sterilisations of Douglas bags and
associated valves and connections
3.5. To perform stock checks, maintain records and inventories of
equipment, ensure adequate stock levels of consumables are
maintained.
3.6. To receive, unpack, check and store incoming deliveries and
make arrangements for the return of damaged goods.
4.
To assist with the construction and maintenance of
science and sports equipment and undertake scientific
projects for the School Technical Manager and relevant
academic colleagues.
4.1. To keep specifications, and user instructional details of
instrumentation and equipment up to date, including how to
operate, maintain repair and any special modifications and
interfacing as applicable. This will require autonomous
development of knowledge for equipment new to the school.
4.2. To carry out appropriate repairs and modifications as required.
4.3
To assist senior colleagues with the construction and
modification of scientific and sports equipment within the
school mechanical or electrical workshops. This may require
the use of hand and machine power tools or test instruments.
4.4
To undertake scientific projects for the technical manager and
relevant academic colleagues. This will include undertaking
appropriate background research. Understanding of the aims
and matching capabilities and compatibility of equipment and
instrumentation to achieve the desired solution.
5.
To provide an efficient and effective technical service to
the school undertaking other related duties throughout
the school as directed and undertaking appropriate staff
development.
5.1. To provide technical/practical assistance and perform general
duties in any area of work or activity within the school or other
university department as may be required.
5.2. To provide technical support for the school dance studio,
theatre and lighting box to service clean, check and maintain
luminaries, audio and visual equipment.
5.3. To provide technical support for the PE practical area as
required to maintain audio/visual, sports and outdoor activities
equipment.
5.4. To provide a booking and loan service for Sport Journalist
equipment ensuring all cameras, tripods, dictaphones and
associated items are fully checked, tested and batteries
charged in a timely and efficient manner prior to reissue to staff
and students
5.5. To undertake appropriate training as required by the STM, so
that the duties can be better achieved, or in order to respond to
change with the introduction of new equipment, new methods
or safety factors in an effective and efficient manner.
5.6. To attend and contribute to technical staff meetings.
5.7. To assist with lifting, carrying and transporting scientific,
computer, sports equipment and general items around the
school or other places within and external to the university
campuses.
5.8. To be flexible with working hours in order to meet varying
student demands on laboratory, newsroom and practical area
space and equipment.
Selection criteria:

6.1
To assist with the implementation of health and safety
measures and to follow and implement all university safety
guidance and procedures. Complying with safety instructions,
where necessary producing and keeping safety documentation,
risk assessments, safe systems of work and COSHH
assessments.
6.2
To attend all safety training as required by the STM or SATM,
including lifting and handling and fire evacuation duties.
6.3
To plan and carry out annual equipment safety Inspections and
portable appliance testing to ensure the equipment meets
required safety standards in accordance with university and
school procedures on all the school’s electrical equipment and
appliances.
6.4
To observe procedures for the correct handling, storage and
disposal of sharps, body fluids and hazardous material.

A working knowledge of:
