Organization Description
EDF, a leading national nonprofit organization, represents more than 400,000 members. Since 1967, EDF has
linked science, economics, law and innovative private-sector partnerships to create breakthrough solutions to
the most serious environmental problems.
The mission of EDF’s Energy Program is to remake the market for efficiency and innovation and to reduce
greatly the environmental impact of energy production, delivery and use. In particular, we are targeting the
public sector, which represents large, often overlooked energy consumers. We partner with universities, cities
and houses of worship to achieve environmentally aggressive goals while generating benefits, such as reduced
costs and an increased public awareness of energy efficiency and sustainability.
Job Description
Buildings are responsible for a significant portion of the US’s greenhouse gas emissions. Climate Corps Public
Sector fellows will help reduce these emissions by developing economically viable energy efficiency plans for
our partner organizations. This is a hands-on training for students who are interested in sustainability, energy
management and/or operations and who want to drive environmental change within the public sector. Last year,
participating host organizations included the City of Raleigh, Elizabeth City State University and St. Paul AME
Church.
In the last two years, 7 fellows have identified over $15 million in five-year energy cost savings for their host
organizations.
These fellowships will act as the first step towards a longer-term relationship between EDF and each
organization as they develop their energy efficiency strategies. Armed with a handbook of energy saving tactics
and access to their host’s operational and financial records, the Climate Corps Public Sector fellow will spend
the summer analyzing potential energy investment strategies. They will build a business case for the most costeffective investments and develop a comprehensive investment plan including resource and budget allocation.
Selected duties may include:
 Gathering detailed data about partner organization’s existing energy usage through interviews with key
employees, observation, outside vendors and professional energy audits
 Modeling financial impact of energy efficiency investments in lighting, office equipment, heating and
cooling, and transportation
 Presenting business case for energy efficiency investments to senior management
 Advising on overall sustainability strategies, such as how to educate and engage building occupants
Qualifications
 MBA, MPA, MPP, Engineering, or Environmental Management graduate candidate
 Excellent oral and written communication skills
 Self-starter with strong project management experience
 Strong background in financial analysis and/or engineering
 Public sector management or consulting experience
 Familiarity with energy efficiency, climate change and energy issues a plus
 Eligibility to work in the United States during the summer of 2010
