I understand the challenging nature of this class, that once a student enrolls in AP Calculus or
AP Statistics he/she cannot drop the class and that all AP students are expected to take AP
exams in May.

The AP program is a way for motivated and capable students to get college credit. The course
work is more demanding than regular high school classes.
Application Requirements:
T.C. Roberson High School requires an approved application in order to take AP courses. Once
a student enrolls in an AP class, the class cannot be dropped and students are required to take the AP
exam in May. In order to earn AP weighted points a student must have a passing grade for both
semesters and take the AP exam. The cost of the exam is approximately $86.00. Students are also
expected to purchase an AP Statistics prep book. The cost is around $17.50. Previous teachers,
parent and student signatures indicate the understanding that the course is challenging and rigorous
and the student is capable of successfully mastering the AP curriculum.
For Statistics students must have successfully completed Algebra 2H and have the
recommendation of their Algebra 2H and any AP teacher. An A or B average is required. Students
with a D average need not apply and those with a C average will be considered only if there are
unusual circumstances. For Calculus, students must have successfully completed Algebra 2H and
Pre-Calculus H and have the recommendation of their Algebra 2H and Pre-Calculus H and any AP
teacher.
AP Statistics Course Requirements (from the AP Statistics course description)
Based on the Advanced Placement Statistics course requirements established by the Advanced
Placement program, AP Statistics is the equivalent of a one-semester introductory college-level
statistics course. Students will pursue a challenging, rigorous academic curriculum. They are
introduced to concepts and tools for collecting, analyzing, and making conclusions from data.
Students receive instruction in four conceptual themes, with appropriate emphasis given to
each theme.
 Exploring Data: Describing patterns and departures from patterns
 Sampling and Experimentation: Planning and conducting a study
 Anticipating Patterns: Exploring random phenomena using probability and simulation
 Statistical Inference: Estimating population parameters and testing hypotheses
AP Statistics draws connections between all aspects of the statistical process, including design,
analysis, and conclusions. It teaches students how to communicate methods, results and
interpretations using the vocabulary of statistics. Graphing calculators are used extensively.
Students are expected to complete and check daily homework assignments and will be assigned
projects to reinforce chapter concepts. Food is sometimes used in activities that introduce chapter
concepts.
AP Calculus Requirements
Success in calculus depends on the student’s mastery of Algebra, Geometry and Pre-Calculus.
In AP Calculus there is an emphasis on multi-representation. Problems dealing with limits,
derivatives and integrals are presented and solved graphically, numerically, algebraically, and
verbally. The course is presented in a rigorous manner. Students must be in the habit of doing and
understanding their homework as well as checking it.
