ALL OUR STORIES JOHN CHARLES HATTON. When preparing the church for the August Open Day we made contact with two visitors from Birmingham who were visiting the churchyard looking for some information about their family. Stephen Hatton and his wife are from Birmingham and he has some information about his grandfather, John Charles Hatton, who worked at Pilkington’s and lived in the Brecks Lane village. In particular he has a photograph taken in the 1920s when his grandfather played for the firm’s football team We could not find any record of his grandfather being buried in the churchyard and at this stage of his research Stephen does not know the exact date of his death. However we were able to find him on the Electoral Register list for 1930 where he is listed as living at 10 Queen Mary Crescent together with his wife Catherine and son John William (Stephen’s father). Because he does not have a computer Stephen was advised to contact his local library and through them access the online records to find an exact date of death for John Charles which might help to find where he is buried. If, as seems likely, it is not at St. Oswald’s then he should contact the municipal cemeteries in Doncaster to see if there is any trace in their records. After leaving St. Oswald’s Stephen went up to the Glasshouse for some refreshment where his beautiful Harley Davidson motor bike attracted much attention. He told his story and spent a pleasant couple of hours talking to people in the pub and listening to their stories of life in Kirk Sandall. We have asked Stephen to keep in touch and let us know if he finds out more.
