I am Community Medicine… Name: Stephen Hoelscher Hometown: Norman, OK Profession: Medical Student His heroes are his parents for their morals and ethics Stephen most likely would not have achieved his goals without their guidance and encouragement. They taught him right and wrong, while simultaneously allowing him to learn those principles with his own experiences. His parents are very excited that he has been accepted into medical school because he is one step closer to doing what he wants to do as a career. The diagnoses of the most common health disparities In order to begin the process of how to reverse the unhealthy trends, we must first recognize what it is that most citizens suffer from. Only then can we look into the specific problem more deeply. An open and honest discussion Stephen can only imagine how difficult it must be to discuss private issues with a person you do not know too well, but the sooner the patient reveals all that may affect his health, the more sufficiently he would be able to make a correct diagnosis. He holds himself accountable and takes responsibility He would like to apply this way of thinking towards his patients so they may take a positive step towards a healthier lifestyle. This method of recommendation is what he will learn in school with time. He believes in this principle and that it should apply to everyone around the world. Improving the lives of people for the betterment of society Stephen believes that every person should primarily be responsible in taking care of themselves and being accountable for their actions. He also holds true that a person should make an honest effort to positively affect at least one other person’s life and in general care for others. He is seeking to learn and find the right path Stephen is very open to the idea of practicing Community Medicine, but would first like to experience and digest it before he is fully committed. This is the process he has always practiced to the best of his abilities. Stephen holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Microbiology from the University of Oklahoma. Other training and research interests Stephen is a Licensed Basic EMT and College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) Level III/Master Certification as a Peer Learning Assistant at the University of Oklahoma. He is interested in epidemiology as a career at this point and would like to learn more about medical statistics and the solutions to curve those statistics for a healthier society.
