JOB DESCRIPTION FOR EYFS NURSERY MANAGER

NAME:

A. General Responsibilities of all Early Years Professionals at King Henry

VIII Preparatory School

1. To be aware and supportive of the School's ethos, its foundation based on Christian principles and the importance of tolerance and understanding between people of different faiths, cultures and backgrounds.

2. To educate pupils in the Early Years phase at the School in accordance with the

School's ethos, as laid down in the Staff Handbook, School Prospectus & Website, and the School's curriculum and policy documents.

3. To share in the corporate responsibility for the well-being and discipline of all the pupils in the School with due regard for the requirements laid down in the School’s pastoral policies.

4. To acknowledge that the staff (both teaching and support personnel) is a team, which co-operates and is supportive of all its members to ensure the smooth running and success of the School, and to take a full part in this team.

5. To contribute to planning sessions in accordance with Early Years schemes of work and curriculum documents, taking into account the availability and use of suitable teaching materials and resources.

6. To be ready to work within a team and to share and produce medium and short term planning.

7. To be conscious that King Henry VIII Preparatory School is an independent school and, as such, the content, styles and methods of supervision, teaching and learning at the

School, and the standards expected of both pupils and staff, will be high and traditional in many areas. To seek to employ the very best aspects of modern practice and resources but understand that decisions to change and adapt to these should be based on experienced professional judgement and careful consideration rather than the latest government initiative. To be aware that the curriculum of an independent school nursery or reception class should be broader and different in some aspects from that of a maintained school.

8. To be fully versed in and apply the School’s policies relating to Health and Safety,

Pastoral matters (including Child Protection) ,assessment, record keeping and reporting of pupils’ attainment.

9. To help keep an accurate, up-to-date record of work, which should reflect an evaluation of some lessons taught and modification of planning in the light of experience. Also to keep evidence of children’s attainment.

10. To work with the EYFS team to create a stimulating Early Years environment, ensuring that it is regularly updated and changed to support the needs of the children within the Nursery and the topics within the curriculum.

11. To be available to speak with parents outside school hours for parents' evenings and individual interviews, and to adhere to the response times outlined in the Coventry

School Foundation Complaints Policy, in the event of receiving a complaint from a parent.

12. To attend departmental meetings, some of which will be scheduled outside the normal teaching day. To attend school and participate during staff inset days.

13. To participate in the School Staff Development Review programme and be prepared to develop professional and personal skills to achieve agreed targets.

14. To keep up-to-date with current educational ideas within the EYFS and in education generally. To disseminate information and knowledge gained as a result of attending courses, lectures, seminars, etc.

15. To take registration of pupils in accordance with School and legal requirements.

16. To superintend children at breaktimes in the School according to the rota drawn up by the Head of Early Years Foundation Stage and the Deputy Head, Swallows.

17. To attend assemblies.

18. To join in with and be supportive of events and activities taking place within the

School, including activities led by the Parents’ Association.

19. To be available to cover absent colleagues until 6.00 p.m. on occasion.

20. To be available each academic year for three Open Mornings (both on Saturday from

9.30 – 12.30) – or the equivalent.

21. To be prepared to follow the Health and Safety policies laid down by Coventry

School Foundation and to take a part in the assessment of risks for activities and in areas where the teacher works and might be required to teach or supervise children.

22. To demonstrate competence in the use of ICT so that all aspects of the administrative requirements necessary for a member of staff at the School can be met and to be able to use ICT as a vehicle for teaching.

B. Working hours and specific training

1.

To be willing to undertake First Aid Training at regular intervals.

2.

To administer First Aid to children with minor injuries and medicines.

3.

To work a 37.5 hour week, from 10.00 a.m. until 6.00 pm Monday to Friday, taking 30 minutes for lunch break during term time and to work from 9.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. during the school holidays. The precise times may change according to the needs of the School.

C. Management responsibilities

1.

Provide day-to-day leadership of Nursery staff under the direction of the Head of

Early Years.

2.

To create a vibrant, happy and inspiring Early Years learning environment.

3.

To ensure the Nursery is properly resourced and resources are clean, properly stored and safe.

4.

To lead the organisation of the School’s Nursery and out-of-hours care services for infants, under the line management of the Head of Early Years.

5.

To lead and support the School’s out-of-hours care and playclub manager.

6.

To conduct annual appraisals with Nursery and Early Years staff.

7.

To recommend, direct and record CPD for Nursery staff.

8.

To ensure that all regulatory documentation regarding the Early Years

Foundation Stage is current and available for inspection.

9.

To take responsibility for Health and Safety within the EYFS setting, liaising with the Site Manager of King Henry VIII School and the Head of EYFS regarding any issues that need to be resolved.

10.

To have responsibility for the creation of electronic records of Learning Journeys in the Nursery.

11.

To lead child protection and safeguarding in the Early Years environment under the line management of the School DSL.

12.

To recruit additional helpers and staff to provide out-of-hours care in liaison with

The Head of Early Years.

13.

To keep a register and up-to-date records of all children (both term time and out of term time) and to give regular feedback to parents about their child’s development and progress.

Supervision/Management of People

1.

The post holder will be responsible for management, supervision and appraisal of the following staff: o The Manager of Playclub and out-of-hours care o Nursery Nurses o Out-of-hours and playclub assistants.

2.

From time to time there may be the requirement to manage the work of staff who are appointed for supply work or to provide supervision for students on placement.

Decisions

1.

The Nursery manager will be expected to make day-to-day decisions about matters which directly impact on the day-to-day care of children and staff.

2.

The Nursery Manager will be expected to make recommendations and proposals about service developments and changes but not to make decisions about substantive changes to the Nursery.

The duties and responsibilities in this job description are not restrictive and the post holder may be required to undertake any other duties which may be required from time to time. Any such duties should not, however, substantially change the general character of the post.

To work under line management of the Head of Early Years

This job description may be amended at any time after discussion, but in any case will be reviewed annually at each appraisal meeting.
