AVERAGE TEMPERATURES AND WEATHER CONDITIONS FOR MID TO LATE MAY IN SPAIN The climate of Madrid is dry, warm and pleasant. It's high altitude and proximity to mountains causes some wide variations in winter and summer temperatures. In summer the heat at midday can be intense, with pleasantly cool evenings. Rain in Madrid is a rarity. On the average, we can expect to see high temperatures in the low to mid 70s and a low of about 50. As we head further south, we can expect temperatures to rise. In Cordoba we’ll see daytime highs in the mid 70s and lows in the mid 50s. Average yearly rainfall is about 2.6 inches. Seville being slightly further south will offer daytime highs in the upper 70s and nighttime lows of around 55° Yearly rainfall averages 1.4 inches. Seville has a mild Mediterranean climate with warm, sunny summers and cool sea breezes. Granada is 2231 feet above sea level, so its elevation will mean more moderate temperatures. Morocco’s temperatures climb to the upper 70s or lower 80s in mid May, and it’s very dry, with virtually no humidity. Expect the same conditions for Gibraltar, on the southern- most tip of Spain. Costa del Sol should be breezy and warmer, with an average high temperature of around 76° and a low of around 56°. If Madrid was sunny, Valencia will probably be even sunnier, with about 9 and a half hours of sunshine per day. Barcelona and Tarragona, also coastal cities, will mean highs in the lower 70s and evening lows of around 50°. Average rainfall is relatively high for Spain, around 2.6 inches. Barcelona enjoys a wonderful climate almost year round. All in all, I think we can expect to see lots of sunshine and pleasant conditions for our trip, as we’re visiting in one of most ideal times with regard to the weather. A good sunscreen and/or hat will probably prove very useful. Despite the generalizations, weather conditions can of course be extremely variable, and it’s always best to come prepared. Dressing in layers is still the best option. A small umbrella or a waterproof jacket with a hood should be all you’ll need to protect against the elements.
