Akron Zoological Park Job Posting Veterinary Intern Date: September 24, 2013 Qualifications: A DVM degree or equivalent from an AVMA-accredited veterinary school, a valid Ohio veterinary license, and a valid driver’s license are required. One year of post-graduate veterinary experience in private practice or completion of a veterinary internship is preferred. Position Description: The Akron Zoological Park (AZP) is currently taking applications for a Veterinary Internship. The AZP houses a diverse collection of over 1200 animals representing over 150 species. The Veterinary Intern is an educational position that works along with the Veterinarian to provide medical and surgical care for the zoo’s animal collection. This is an 18-20 month position intended to provide clinically focused experience in all aspects of zoological medicine. The Veterinary Intern is an active member of the veterinary team which consists of one full time veterinarian, two relief veterinarians, two registered veterinary technicians, and a hospital coordinator/registrar. This program focuses on training in all aspects of the medical and surgical care of zoo animals, including diagnosis, treatment, surgery, preventative medicine, parasitology, radiology, nutrition, anesthesiology, pathology, record keeping, and staff communication regarding zoological cases. In addition to the clinical work, the Veterinary Intern will also engage in topic rounds, journal rounds, research projects, presentations, and manuscript writing. The purpose of the internship is to provide experience to improve clinical competency with zoological species and to prepare the intern for a zoological medicine residency or a clinical position in a zoological institution. The position is a full-time, FLSA exempt position requiring at least 40 hrs/wk. The position does occasionally require work on days off, weekends, and holidays. The successful candidate should have a high degree of organization, attention to detail, good communication skills, professionalism, and a working knowledge of veterinary medicine and surgery.
