LARGE ATTRACTIVE COMPOST BIN FOR ABOUT $60 Northern Kentucky Master Gardener Bob Green came up with this idea: Get two 4’ x 8’ sheets of lattice from a hardware store. Bend each into a half circle and tie together with plastic cable ties or wire using about 6” overlap. This will form a cylindrical bin 4’ high and 4’9” in diameter that will hold 2.67 cubic yards. If you find a 4’ high bin is too hard to work with, cut the lattice sheets down to 3’ x 8’ and make a 3’ high bin that will hold 2 cubic yards. You can use either treated wood lattice or plastic lattice. Wood is a little less expensive. For best results use “privacy lattice” which has smaller holes. The “privacy lattice” comes in either white plastic or wood. Of course, if you don’t like the color, you can paint the bin. If you cut down the bin to 3’ you can cut the left over 1’ x 8’ strips to piece together a makeshift lid for the bin to help keep critters out.
