How to Calculate your Social Work GPA

To Calculate Your “GPA in the Major”
For the Application to the Major
For students using the 2012-2013 Bulletin to present:
Create the following grid, using all required general education, foundation,
integrative, and social work courses that you have completed and for which you
earned a letter grade. Remember to include the actual grade of a course. For courses
in which you earned a ‘D’ or ‘F’ and even if you are retaking the course or plan to retake
the course, you will need to report the you actual letter grade. However, you do not
need to report SOWK 315 (or 312) which is only offered P/NC and do not include the
courses in which you are enrolled this semester as you do not have grades yet. If you
have more than one course in one of required ‘social work’ general education
curriculum areas (e.g. Bio, Human Diversity A, etc.) that will count, feel free to report the
highest letter grade(s).
Here is an example of one hypothetical student’s GPA calculation:
Column A
Column B
Column C
Column D

for which you
received grades:

(for example)
Multiply Column B times Column C

Soc/Econ/Pol#2:
Values/Ethics/Crit:

SW-212 or 210
SW-214 (unless waived)
SW-310 or 305

(continue with any
other graded SOWK
courses you've had,
e.g. 412, 469)
This example: Total Cr=35
3 (B)
4 (A)
3 (B)
4 (A)
2.33 (C+)
3 (B)
4 (A)
3 (B)
3.67 (A-)

3 (B)
(for example)
9

12
7 (=3x2.33)
9
12
9
11 (=3x3.67)
12

Total of (Cr x Grades)=109
**Grade numeric equivalents:
A+ = 4.00
A = 4.00
A- = 3.67
B+ = 3.33
B = 3.00
B- = 2.67
C+ = 2.33
C = 2.00
C- = 1.67
D+ = 1.33
D = 1.00
D- = 0.67
In this example, divide 102 by 31 to get GPA in the major: 109/35=3.11
Now check to see if your result is reasonable -- since this student had mostly B's with a
few A's and only one C, the 3.11 looks about right. If your own GPA comes out as
"6.35", you have done something wrong!
