Jordan Add-on Itinerary/Pricing Sep 10: Cairo / Amman/Petra- Jordan This morning, fly to Amman, the capital of Jordan. After you clear customs at the Queen Alia airport, you meet your Big Five Tours & Expeditions representative who will meet you and begin your tour. North of Amman lies Jerash, the Roman city of Gerasa. Jerash displays some of the finest, most extensive and well-preserved remains of the former empire to be found anywhere. The colonnaded streets, temples, theatres, bathhouses and magnificent oval plaza are complemented by the superbly restored hippodrome, which in Roman times seated up to fifteen thousand people. The Roman Army spanned the centuries from around 700 BC to the fall of Constantinople in 1453 AD – more than two thousand years. Return to Amman for a city tour. The modem and ancient capital of Jordan, Amman was known as Rabat and in Greco-Roman times as Philadelphia. Then onto Petra, one of Jordan's national treasures and by far its best-known tourist attraction. Located about three hours south of Amman, Petra is the legacy of the Nabateans, an industrious Arab people who settled in southern Jordan more than 2000 years ago. Admired then for its refined culture, massive architecture and ingenious complex of dams and water channels, Petra is now a UNESCO world heritage site that enchants visitors from all corners of the globe. Marriott Hotel (B) Sep 11: Petra After breakfast, begin your discovery of Petra, the Rose-Red city. Much of Petra's appeal comes from its spectacular setting deep inside a narrow desert gorge. From the main entrance, the visitor travels on foot through the awesome "SIQ", an immense crack in the sandstone that winds for one kilometer between overhanging cliffs. Petra's most famous monument, the Treasury, appears dramatically at the end of the Siq and various walks and climbs reveal literally hundreds of buildings, facades, tombs, baths, funerary halls, temples and a 3000-seat theater from the 1st Century AD. Journey to Wadi Rum, probably best known because of its connection with the enigmatic British officer T.E. Lawrence, who was based here during the Great Arab Revolt of 1917-18. Famously described by T. E. Lawrence as "vast, echoing and Godlike," and acclaimed by many as one of the most stunning desertscapes in the world, Wadi Rum is a nature-lover's paradise. Explore the vast beauty of Wadi Rum on 4x4 vehicle tour that takes you deep into the heart of the desert. Marriot Hotel(B) Sep 12: Petra / Mount Nebo / Dead Sea After breakfast, drive to Karak to visit Kerak Castle, a massive crusader castle in the Karak Mountains. The locality of al-Kerak, now the site of a flourishing town, is known for the imposing fort erected in the first half of the 12th century by the Crusaders, later conquered by the Arabs. Then, travel to Mount Nebo the alleged burial site of Moses. In Madaba, you view the oldest known mosaic map of the Holy Land, dating back the 6th century AD, at the Saint George’s Greek-Orthodox Church. The Archaeological Museum of Madaba houses numerous mosaics from the Byzantine era. Drive to Dead Sea hotel for overnight.
