SECTION XII UNIFORM WEAR AND APPEARANCE 1. GENERAL. a. Razorback Brigade Cadets are authorized to wear four types of uniforms. They are the Class A and B service uniform, A dress uniform, Class C field (Battle Dress), and Army PT uniform. b. UAF/NSU Army ROTC supply will issue your uniforms. If you need alterations, make arrangements through ROTC supply. Brigade supply will also arrange for you to get your patches to be sewn on at a local Cleaners. Supply will issue you a clean uniform. However, it’s your responsibility to clean all uniforms prior to end of year turn-in. c. You are responsible for the care of the uniforms until returned to supply. This includes bearing the financial responsibility for any lost or damaged uniform items. If you leave the Army ROTC program, you will not get your other grades until you turn in your uniforms. d. All MS I&II cadets will turn in uniforms each semester. The uniforms will be stored and the same uniform reissued to you at the beginning of the next semester. This is intended to save you the problem of storage. All MS III & IV cadets will maintain their uniform issue until just prior to graduation when they will be required to clear supply by either turn—in or purchase of their uniforms. e. All uniforms will be clean, pressed, and well fitting. Uniforms will not be worn while engaged in sports, manual labor, soliciting, or any other non-ROTC function. The Class C uniform is considered a work uniform and will be worn offcampus only when traveling directly to and from campus and the cadet’s residence. You should not wear the Class C uniform into restaurants or stores. Cadets in the National Guard or Army Reserve (to include Simultaneous Membership Program cadets) will be issued a Class A coat, BDU field jacket and two BDU shirts. These uniform items will be worn with UA and Cadet Command shoulder patches during leadership Labs and other cadet functions. The other uniform items issued by the National Guard or Reserve unit will be worn during the Guard or Reserve functions. f. g. For additional guidance on the wear of your uniforms, ask your instructor or refer to Cadet Command Reg. 670-1, Wear and Appearance of Army Uniforms and Insignia. 2. Personal Appearance. The right to wear the uniform of the United States Army is an honor and a privilege. Improper wearing of the uniform or improper conduct while in uniform is degrading to the Army and the individual. The manner of wearing the uniform, its neatness, fit, and general appearance are indicative of the wearer ‘s personal characteristics. Wear your uniform, to include your headgear, completely. Do not mix military and civilian clothing. XII - 1 a. Male Cadet. Male cadets will be clean- with neatly trimmed hair. If you wear a mustache, trim it neatly. b. Female Cadets. Female cadets will wear their hair so that it does not appear ragged or extend below the bottom edge of the collar. Wear your skirts from one inch above to two inches below the mid-knee point. Only female cadets may wear earrings with the service or dress uniforms. Earrings may only be worn with service or dress uniforms. Earrings will not to exceed 1/4 inch in diameter), unadorned, spherical type in gold, silver or pearl. When worn, earrings will fit snugly against the ear as a matched pair with only one earring per ear lobe. c. Jewelry: Cadets my wear wrist watches, identification bracelets, small tie tacks and rings while in uniform. No other jewelry, watch chains, pens, or pencils will appear exposed on uniforms. 3. CLASS A UNIFORM (GREENS). a. The Class A service uniform for men consists of the Army green coat and trousers, green shirt (short or long-sleeve), black four-in-hand (long) tie and other authorized accessories. b. The Class A service uniform for females consists of the Army green coat, green shirt (short or long sleeve), black necktab and other authorized accessories. Female cadets are issued both the skirt and slacks. The male Class A and female Classic uniforms are shown on the following two pages. c. Items which are worn with the Class A uniform are: (1) Shirt. When wearing the Class A uniform, you can wear either the short or long-sleeve shirt. A tie (male) or necktab (female) must be worn on the shirt. Females do not have tuck in to their skirt or slacks. The males will always tuck-in their shirts. (2) Hat. Male and female cadets will wear the garrison cap with the class A and class B uniforms. The insignia worn is the ROTC with wreath. This insignia is centered, parallel to the bottom edge, and 1-inch from the front edge of the left side of the cap. XII - 2 MALE CLASS A UNIFORM XII - 3 FEMALE CLASS A UNIFORM XII - 4 ROTC Insignia worn Centered, parallel to bottom edge of hat. 1 inch from front on left side of hat.. (3) Cadet Rank Insignia. All (officer and enlisted) cadet rank insignia is worn 5/8 inch from the shoulder seam on the shoulder loops. The top of the rank insignia should be closest to the shoulder loop button. Metal, non-subdued insignia are worn on the shoulder loops. On the green shirt, cloth shoulder marks (for Cadet Corporal through Cadet Lieutenant Colonel) should be worn on the shoulder loops. Cadet Privates and Privates First Class will wear brass insignia of rank on the shoulder loops of the green shirt. The insignia will be positioned on the loop 5/8 inch from the shoulder seam. Cadet rank insignia is shown below. 5/8” . XII - 5 (4) The UA Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI). The UA Distinctive Unit Insignia (Unit Crests) are worn by enlisted and officer cadets on the shoulder loop centered between the rank and shoulder loop button. Because the length of rank insignia, cadet captains do not wear the DUI on the Class A jacket. Insignia from National Guard or Reserve units should not be worn with the cadet Class A uniform. Cadets in the Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP) will wear their UA DUI, whenever such insignia is required for a UA activity. During National Guard or Reserve drills, the SMP unit DUI may be worn. Cadets who participated in CTLT may wear the DUI of the unit they served with. XII - 6 (5) Cadet Command (Leadership Excellence) Patch — The full color Cadet Command patch (shown below) will be worn centered on the left sleeve, 1/2 inch below the shoulder seam. If a tab (Ranger Challenge, Special Forces, etc.) is worn, the patch will be sewn 1/4 inch below the tab. The shield shape of the patch signifies the Army’s mission of national defense. The four quarters of the patch represent the four courses that comprise the Senior ROTC curriculum. The sword signifies courage, gallantry and the self-sacrifice intrinsic to the profession of arms. The lamp represents the quest for knowledge, and the partnership between Army ROTC and the nation’s colleges. The helmet symbolizes the Greek civilization’s concept of the warrior-scholar. The motto “Leadership Excellence” expresses the Army ROTC mission to the nation. Cadet Command Patch Patch with Ranger U of A Patch Challenge Patch (6) The UA Patch. The University of Arkansas shoulder patch (shown above right) will be worn centered on the right sleeve, 1/2 inch below the shoulder seam. (7) Shoulder Tabs. Cadets may wear one authorized full color shoulder tab (Ranger Challenge, Ranger or Special Forces) on the left shoulder of the Class A/Classic jacket. The tab will be placed 1/2 inch below the shoulder seam. The shoulder patch will be sewn 1/4 inch below the tab. If more than one tab has been earned, the cadet may select the tab to be worn. The Ranger Challenge Tab may only be worn with a Leadership Excellence patch. (8) ROTC Insignia. All cadets wear the non-subdued “R.O.T.C.” insignia on the collar, 5/8 inch above and centered on the notch between the lapel and the collar. The insignia will be perpendicular to the inside edge of the lapel. XII - 7 (9) Branch Insignia. Cadets who have been notified of branch assignments will wear the insignia of their branch. Cadets will wear the insignia of branch 5/8-inch below the notch between the lapel and collar. The branch insignia will be centered on the “R.O.T.C.” insignia and parallel to the inside edge of the lapel. Nameplate. Male cadets will wear the nameplate centered on the flap of the right breast pocket, centered between the top of the button and the top of the pocket. Female cadets will wear the nameplate centered horizontally on the right side between 1 and 2 inches above the top of the upper jacket button. (10) Ribbons. Authorized ribbons for male cadets are worn centered 1/8 inch above the left breast pocket. Female cadets will wear authorized ribbons so that the bottom of the lowest row is in line with the bottom of the nameplate. Ribbons should be worn in the correct order of precedence. This means that the most important (highest precedence) ribbon is on the top row closest to the center of the body. A full row consists of three ribbons. If more than six ribbons are authorized, ribbons in the third and succeeding rows may be centered or aligned to the left, whichever presents the best appearance. In any case, the first two rows must contain three ribbons each. Only ribbons authorized by the PIS (see Section VII) or awarded in accordance with AR 672-5—1, Military Awards, may be worn. (11) Distinguished Military Student (DMS) Badge. Male cadets who have been recognized as Distinguished Military Students will wear the DMS Badge centered 1/8 inch above the right breast pocket. Female cadets will wear the DNS Badge centered 1/4 inch above nameplate on the right coat front. (12) XII - 8 Academic Achievement Badge. Male cadets who have been recognized for their academic achievement will wear the Academic Achievement Badge centered 1/8 inch above the left breast pocket. Female cadets will wear the Academic Achievement Badge centered 1/4 inch above nameplate on the right coat front. If both the DNS and the Academic Achievement Badges have been awarded, the DNS Badge will be worn. (13) Special Skill Badges - Airborne, Air Assault or other special skill badges will be worn centered and 1/4 inch above any ribbons or the top of the pocket. If a cadet has earned both the Airborne and Air Assault badges, they are worn one above the other, 1/2 inch apart. As both awards have equal precedence, the cadet will determine the order of the two badges. If the Expert Infantryman (EIB), Expert Field Medical (EFMB), or Aircraft Crewman badges are worn, the Airborne, Air Assault or Pathfinder badges are worn on the pocket flap (below the ribbons for females). If other special skill badges have been earned, refer to AR 670—1. (14) Marksmanship Badges. Male cadets will wear authorized marksmanship badges on the left breast pocket flap, 1/8 inch below the pocket flap seam. Female cadets will wear marksmanship badges centered on and 1/4 inch below ribbons. If more than one special skill or marksmanship badge is authorized, they will be equally spaced on the pocket flap with at least one inch between them. Special skills (Airborne, Air Assault, Pathfinder and Driver and Mechanic Badges) have a higher precedence and are worn to the center of the uniform. No more than three badges can be worn at once. (15) XII - 9 Recondo Badge. Male cadets will wear the Recondo Badge centered on the left breast pocket. Female cadets will wear the Recondo badge on the right side centered 1/2 inch under the nameplate. (16) RECONDO BADGE Cadet Troop Leader Training (CTLT) DUI - Cadets who participated in CTLT is authorized to wear the DUI of the unit they serve with on CTLT. Male cadets will wear the DUI centered on the right breast pocket of the coat. Female cadets will wear the DUI centered on and 1/2 inch below the nameplate. If the female cadet is authorized both the Recondo badge and the CTLT DUI, she will wear them 1 inch apart, 1/2 inch below the nameplate. The DUI will be worn on the inside. (17) Shoulder Cords. Cadet members of the Ranger Company, AUSA and the Brigade Color Guard may earn shoulder cords. Either the Ranger or AUSA shoulder cords are worn on the right shoulder. The cord is fastened to the shoulder 1oop button under the shoulder loop and the cord goes under the armpit. The Color Guard shoulder cord is worn on the left shoulder. If other shoulder cords have been earned, they may be worn as desired. Only one shoulder cord may be worn on each shoulder. (18) Shoes. Male cadets will wear black, oxford shoes. Female cadets in the basic course will be issued black oxfords. Female cadets in the advanced course cadets will be issued black pumps. When wearing the slacks, female cadets must wear the black oxfords with black socks. When wearing the skirt, either shoe may be worn. (19) Overcoat. The black overcoat may be worn when appropriate or designated. Cadets will wear their rank on the shoulder loops 5/8 inch from the shoulder seam. Unit crests are not worn on the overcoat. (20) XII - 10 4. CLASS AA UNIFORM. For social events, the Class AA uniform for male cadets is the Class A uniform with a white shirt and black bow tie. When the Class A uniform is specified, female cadets will wear the Classic uniform with skirt and green blouse. This uniform is worn to the Military Ball and on other occasions where a dress uniform is specified. If a cadet has received branch assignment, the wearing of Dress Blue uniform (without rank) is permitted to the Military Ball. You will wear the green or blue service cap until 1800. After 1800, no headgear is authorized. 5. CLASS B UNIFORM. The Class B uniform is essentially the Class A uniform without the jacket. It can be worn in three forms, short—sleeve shirt without tie, short-sleeve shirt with tie and long-sleeve shirt with tie. The tie (male) or necktab (female) must always be worn when wearing the long-sleeve shirt. The black sweater may be worn with this uniform. a. Cadet Rank Insignia. Cloth shoulder marks (for Cadet Corporal through Cadet Lieutenant Colonel) are worn on the shoulder loops of the green shirt. Cadet Privates and Privates First Class will wear brass insignia of rank on the shoulder loops of the green shirt. The insignia will be positioned on the loop 5/8 inch from the shoulder seam. The UA unit crest is not worn on the green shirt. b. Nameplate. Male cadets will wear the nameplate on the flap of the right breast pocket, centered between the top of the button and the top of the pocket. Female cadets will wear the nameplate on the right side of shirt slightly above the top button. c. Black Sweater. The black pullover sweater may also be worn with the Class B uniform. When wearing the sweater, the nameplate is worn centered 1/2 inch above the bottom of the chest patch and the UA unit crest will be centered above the nameplate. Cadet Corporals and above will wear the cloth shoulder marks on the sweater. Cadet Privates and Privates First Class will wear brass rank on the shoulder loops of the sweater. When the sweater is worn over a green shirt with tie or neck tab, the shirt collar will be inside the sweater. When worn over a short-sleeve shirt without a tie, the shirt collar will be worn outside the sweater. XII - 11 MALE CLASS B UNIFORM Class B – Long Sleeve w/tie Class B – Short Sleeve w/tie Class B – Short Sleeve w/o tie XII - 12 FEMALE CLASS B UNIFORMS XII - 13 BLACK SWEATER W/CLASS B d. Accessories. The black belt, brass buckle, and garrison cap are worn with this uniform. Ribbons, badges and other ornamentation not addressed here are not to be worn with this uniform. Rangers may wear the black beret if authorized. e. Black Windbreaker. Cadets with the Class B uniform authorize the black windbreaker for optional wear. The windbreaker will not be issued and must be purchased by the cadet if desired. Only non-subdued rank will be worn with the windbreaker. Cadets will wear insignia of rank on the shoulder loops of the windbreaker. If worn, the windbreaker must be zipped at least three-fourths the way up. Because the windbreaker is not issued to all cadets, it will not be worn in formations. 6. CLASS C UNIFORM. The Class C uniform is the Battle Dress Uniform (BDU) with combat boots, brown T-shirt, black belt, subdued belt buckle, BDU (woodland pattern) cap, cadet rank, ROTC or branch insignia (for cadets who have been branched). The BDU trousers should be bloused into the boots. Subdued (black and green) Cadet Command (left sleeve) and UA ROTC (right sleeve) patches are sewn on this uniform. Ribbons are not worn on this uniform. When conditions warrant, long underwear or green sweaters may be worn under the BDU shirt. If the long underwear is not brown, it should not be visible. a. Unless specified, cadets may wear either the temperate weather or lightweight (hot weather) BDU. The hot weather and temperate weather uniforms will not be mixed (hot weather trousers and temperate weather shirt). b. BDU Cap. Center the rank insignia—horizontally and vertically—on the front of the cap. When on campus, cadet officers will wear non-subdued rank insignia on their caps. All other cadets will wear subdued rank insignia. Do not block or shape your hat to stiffen it. If the temperate uniform is worn, then the temperate BDU cap must be worn with it – no mix/match (uniform vs. cap). XII - 14 c. Cadet Enlisted Rank Insignia. Insignia of rank will be centered (both horizontally and vertically) on the front of the cap. When on campus, cadet officers will wear nonsubdued rank insignia on their caps. All other cadets will wear subdued rank insignia. The hat will not be blocked or shaped to stiffen it. d. Cadet Enlisted Rank Insignia. Subdued cadet rank insignia is worn on both collars of the uniform. It will be positioned 1 inch from point of the collar along a line bisecting the angle formed by the collar point. e. Cadet Officer Rank Insignia. Subdued cadet rank insignia is worn on the right collar. It is centered, perpendicular to, and 1 inch from the lower edge of the collar. ROTC Insignia. Cadet officers will wear subdued ROTC insignia on the left collar of the uniform. It will be centered, 1 inch from and to the lower edge of the collar. The “R” in ROTC will be 1 inch to the lower collar edge. For cadets who have accessed, branch insignia will replace the ROTC insignia on the left collar. f. g. Name and US Army tapes. Cadets will wear name and US Army tapes on the BDU shirt and field jacket. They will be worn immediately above the left breast pockets (US Army on name and US Army tapes will be worn and nametape on the right). h. Special Skill Badges. Up to four subdued special skills badges may be worn on the Battle Dress Uniform if one badge has been earned; it should be centered about 1/4 inch above the US Army tape. If two have been earned, they should be along a vertical line centered above the US Army tape. If three or four badges have been earned, consult AR 670-1 for correct wear. Marksmanship badges are not worn with the Class C uniform. Shoulder Tabs. Ranger, Special Forces and Ranger Challenge tabs are worn 1/8 inch below the shoulder seam of the left sleeve. The Cadet Command patch will be sewn 1/4 inch below the tab. Only one tab may be worn, regardless of the number authorized. If more than one tab has been earned the cadet may choose which is to be worn. The Ranger Challenge tab is not worn with Active or Reserve unit shoulder patches other than the Leadership Excellence patch. i. XII - 15 Boots. Boots are worn with the Class C uniform. Boots should be clean and polished (“spit” shining is not required). Styles authorized are the boots issued by supply, “jump” boots and other styles sold by the Military Clothing Store. Jungle boots (with canvas uppers) are authorized for wear while on Razorback Brigade activities. j. k. Field Jacket. The winter version of the Battle Dress Uniform includes field jacket and black gloves. Shoulder patches, name and U.S. Army tapes are worn on the field jacket as on the BDU shirt. Insignia of rank is worn on shoulder loops as specified for the Class A coat. Distinctive Unit Insignia is not worn with the field jacket. Overcoat. The black overcoat may be worn with the Battle Dress Uniform when weather conditions warrant. l. m. Load-Bearing Equipment. Load-bearing equipment (LBE) is worn as shown below. Canteens are worn on both hips and the first aid case is worn on the left shoulder (for right-handed shooters) or the right shoulder (for left-handed shooters) XII - 16 7. PT UNIFORM. a. On PT session on Monday through Friday, cadets will wear Army Black shorts and Gray Army T-shirt, calf length white socks, tennis shoes, and Army sweats for PT. b. Physical Fitness Excellence Patch. Cadets scoring 270 or above (90% on each event) of a record APFT are authorized to wear the Physical Fitness Excellence Patch. Score has to be maintained or the patch has to be removed. 8. MISCELLANEOUS NOTES. a. Rank. When wearing the Class A, Class B, overcoat, windbreaker, or sweater, “brass” rank is always worn. When wearing the Class C uniform, subdued rank is worn. Subdued rank is also worn on these the field jackets. The only exception to this rule is the rank worn on the BDU cap. When on campus, cadet officers will wear “brass” rank on the cap. When training in a field environment, all cadets will wear subdued rank on the BDU cap. XII - 17
