Military Science and Leadership 201
Individual Leadership Studies
1. Course Purpose and Description: The purpose of this course is to develop your knowledge of self, selfconfidence, and individual leadership skills. Through active learning activities, you will develop problem
solving and critical thinking skills, and apply communication, feed back and conflict resolution skills. This
course will give you a basic understanding of the unique aspects of the officer corps, fundamentals of
leadership and decision-making, Army’s institutional values, and principles of individual fitness and healthy
lifestyle.
2. Course Structure. This course is structured lessons and activities that include Communication, Leadership,
Personal Development, and Physical Well-being.
a. On-line Course Work. Five class hours are allotted for completing a web-based program that is a precommissioning requirement. This program, The Enhanced Skills Training Program (ESTP), is designed to
assess and strengthen the basic mathematics, English and analytical skills of Army ROTC cadets to prepared
them for successful careers as leaders and managers.
b. In addition, Leadership Labs that provide practical military experience for cadets are scheduled once a
week. Leadership Labs will familiarize students with essential individual soldier skills and small unit tactics.
2. Course Administration:
a. Classroom. Classroom attendance, preparation, and participation is essential for significant learning and
is reflected in the course grading. Class meets from 1030 to 1150 on Tuesdays and Thursdays and Leadership
Labs are from 1500 to 1630 on Thursdays (See Enclosure 1, Schedule of Classes). Contracted cadets must
wear uniform through out the days of classes and during Leadership Labs. Non-contracted cadets are
encouraged to wear the uniform. Keep in mind, when you wear the uniform you are representing the U.S. Army
and must abide by standards of appearance and conduct. We will arrange for you to receive a quick block of
instruction on the wear of the uniform and appropriate conduct.
b. Pre-class Activities. Many of the class discussions and activities are based on required and optional
readings and activities to be completed before class.
c. We strongly encourage you to participate in other activities that will enhance your personal development
and leadership skills and experience. Some of these events are listed in enclosure 2 (Schedule ROTC Events
and Activities) of this syllabus. You will receive extra credit for participation in these events.
3. Grading: There will be one (1) test and an on-line project (ESTP) given for grade. Attendance, classroom
participation, and pre-classroom preparation will be graded. Extra credit for participation on/in ROTC team
and functions will be available. The following point/grade scale will be used for grading purposes:

600 - 690
F
599 - and below
b. Grade determination will be based on the following point scale:

c. Unexcused late work or tests will receive one grade lower. Missed work/tests must be made up within one
week to receive any credit.
d. Student Resources:
-Cadet Text. The Cadet text contains the readings that support this course. It must be returned at the
end of the course. Please do not mark the textbook in any way.
-Cadet CD-ROM. A CD-ROM is included in each cadet textbook and contains additional reference
materials, readings and multimedia that support this course.
-Blackboard (Bb). The Blackboard course site, http://rotc.blackboard.com, contains
Military Science and Leadership course materials.
