DRAFT OF MOTION:
NA
DATE: March 18, 2008
BACKGROUND:
Public Information Office media relations activities for the past quarter (mid Dec. – mid March
2008 ) have focused in several areas:
 ALA Midwinter Meeting
 ALA Youth Media Awards
 School Library Reform – Spokane Moms
 Book Challenges
 Campaign Messages
 Technology
Since the Midwinter report to the Executive Board, the American Library Association’s (ALA)
clipping service (based on the top 150 newspapers by circulation) and online news scans returned
more than 609 articles including mentions of the ALA, representing a circulation of more than
94,440,414 million. Online readership included 215,584,053 visitors per month (VPM). Please
note that VPM is defined as the numbers of visitors the site receives, and may not reflect how
many may have viewed ALA materials. The overall total of ALA media coverage circulation is
more than 310,024,467 million.
According to the Newspaper Association of America, there are more than 1,400 daily
newspapers and 6,700 weekly newspapers in the United States, so the following list of
placements should be viewed as a snapshot of coverage achieved by the ALA.

Summary
Philadelphia is the 4th largest market in the country, and proved to be a very strong media
market for the ALA Midwinter Meeting. Such issues as gaming in libraries, literacy and users’
privacy were a few of the key topics discussed.
Loriene Roy, ALA president, and Joseph McPeak, director, Philadelphia Public Library coauthored an op ed titled “What's playing at the library?” The opinion piece appeared in the
Jan.11 edition of the Philadelphia Daily News, and discussed how libraries are using gaming to
support literacy, and how this new library format encourages young users and families to use
their local library.
Roy participated in local interviews with FOX’s “Good Day Philadelphia,” 92.5 FM’s
“Breaktime,” the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Philadelphia Daily News to discuss the
Midwinter Meeting.
ALA’s Washington Office provided a discussion on National Security Letters during its
Washington Update with Bassem Youssef, the highest-ranking Arab-American agent employed
by the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI). Associated Press (AP) reporter Mary Claire Dale
attended this discussion and numerous local and national newspapers including the Philadelphia
Daily News, Philadelphia Inquirer, Newsday, Forbes, FOX News, Orlando Sentinel, San Diego
Union Tribune, Chicago Tribune, Kansas City Star and Congressional Quarterly picked up her
article.
The ALA Youth Media Awards received the majority of coverage during the first quarter of
2008. The awards honor books, videos and other outstanding materials for children and teens.
Recognized worldwide for the high-quality they represent, the awards guide parents, educators,
librarians and others in selecting the best materials for youth. Selected by judging committees
composed of librarians and other children's experts, the awards encourage original and creative
work.
This year’s award announcements received a flurry of national coverage. Roy, division
leadership and award chairs participated in print, radio and television interviews regarding this
year’s selections.
ALA leadership and award committee chairs participated in a series of local and national media
interviews. Roy appeared on the Today Show with Newbery Medal winner Laura Amy Schlitz
and Caldecott Medal winner Brian Selznick, and also discussed the Coretta Scott King Book
Award and Pura Belpré award at length with NPR’s “Tell Me More.” Committee chairs
participated in interviews with the New York Times, “All Things Considered,” WPHL-TV’s “In
Focus,” and WPVI – TV’s “Puerto Rican Panorama.”
WPHL-TV’s “In Focus” program featured an in studio interview with Coretta Scott King Book
Award Committee Chair Deborah Taylor. Issues discussed included the importance of libraries
in communities across the country, funding, the Patriot Act, diversity, EMIERT and the Youth
Media Awards.

REFORMA leadership including President Mario Ascencio and Lucia Gonzalez, national chair
for the REFORMA Children's and Young Adults Services Committee, appeared together on
WPVI – TV’s “Puerto Rican Panorama,” a show geared towards Hispanic audiences, which airs
on the highest rated television station in Philadelphia. Both discussed the Pura Belpré award,
library service for new Americans and the ALA Midwinter Meeting. The segment ran 30 times
during the week of Jan.19.
Highly circulated daily newspapers like USA Today, Dallas Morning News, New York Times,
Boston Globe, Miami Herald, Houston Chronicle, San Francisco Chronicle and Los Angeles
Times also provided awards coverage.
This was the third year that the Public Information Office (PIO) coordinated efforts to provide a
live Webcast of the ALA Youth Awards. More than 7,600 logged on to view the award
announcements. The Webcast and awards presentation took months of preparation and
coordination with ALSC, YALSA, ALA staff liaisons, award committee chairs, ALA’s ITTS
department, onsite audio/video vendors and Web vendor Unikron.
Prior to the Webcast PIO received multiple calls from educators and librarians who planned to
use the Webcast to support curriculum. Most held mock elections in their classrooms and
libraries, and wanted to compare their results to this year’s announcement.
This year ALA offered a new method of delivering Youth Media Award results. More than 1,100
members registered to receive this year’s results through text messaging.
As our nation’s school libraries continue to experience funding decreases, the PIO, ALA
Advocacy Office and the American Association of School Librarians (AASL), worked to support
a parents group from Spokane, Wash., with efforts to generate publicity for their attempt to lobby
for legislation that would generate funding for the state’s school libraries.
PIO helped coordinate and publicize a Rally in Olympia, Wash., that highlighted the value of
school libraries. Several documents were crafted to help stimulate coverage including an event
rundown, talking points and press release. PIO also secured interview opportunities for AASL
and ALA leadership and the parents known as the “Spokane Moms.” Media groups such as
District Administration Magazine, Education Week, The News Tribune (Tacoma), KPLU-AM
(NPR Seattle), KGY-AM (AP Broadcast), KLAY-AM (Tacoma talk radio) and KVI-AM
provided coverage. PIO also videotaped portions of the event that was later edited by AL Focus
and posted to American Libraries and the I Love Libraries Web sites.
Several high-profile book challenges took place this quarter. The release of the “The Golden
Compass,” a film based on the first of three books in Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials
trilogy, triggered a boycott campaign by conservative religious organizations, and sparked
hundreds of attempts to remove the book from libraries and schools in the U.S. and Canada.
Most challenges were based on the books portrayal of religion and its implied anti-Catholic
sentiment.
Other book challenges that made headlines were “King & King,” by Linda de Haan and “And
Tango Makes Three,” by Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell. Both were challenged for their
depiction of same-sex marriage.

As filtering continued to generate negative to neutral coverage, there were an array of positive
articles on how Google and other technologies have secured the future of libraries. Headlines
like “The age of libraries isn't over yet” (Chicago Tribune) and “In digital age, libraries turn a
page on services they offer” (Dallas Morning News) continue to highlight the Campaign for
America’s Libraries messages that “libraries are changing and dynamic places,” and clearly
illustrates how libraries have evolved and continue to offer programs and services that reflect
the needs of their communities.
The surge in teen library use, gaming in libraries, and public library funding also made headlines.
